MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five members of the West Virginia University tennis team have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Women's Tennis Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Seniors Paula Goetz (industrial engineering), Abigail Rosiello (immunology & medical microbiology) and Kirsten White (exercise physiology), as well as sophomores Giovanna Caputo (sport & exercise psychology) and Anne-Sophie Courteau (biology) all represented the Mountaineers on the first team. West Virginia's five first-team selections were the most in the conference.
Of the 30 student-athletes to make the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Caputo and Rosiello were two of just six student-athletes to achieve a perfect, 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
This year marks the third consecutive first-team selection for Goetz. It also marks the second consecutive year in which Rosiello has been named to the first team. Last year, Caputo and Courteau were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
It also is the sixth straight season that at least three WVU student-athletes were named to the first team.
"It is a great recognition for our team and the student-athletes to be named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team," said coach Miha Lisac. "The recognition is for the athletes' work they are putting into their studies and the investment they are making in their futures."
Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled events to qualify. Student-athletes can also qualify if they have maintained a 3.0 GPA in the previous two semesters and fulfill the participation requirement.
