Eight Wins Power WVU Past Duquesne

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team claimed a season-opening, 6-1 win over Duquesne at the Alpha Tennis Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon.
The victory over the Dukes was the Mountaineers' first season-opening victory since 2014, when WVU defeated Akron, 4-3.
"Today was a step in the right and a solid start to the season," said head coach Miha Lisac.
Doubles Recap
The first match to finish came from the No. 3 slot, where junior Christina Jordan and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau claimed the first victory of the day for WVU, defeating Maddy Adams and Margot Pessy, 6-2.
Finishing shortly after and starting in the No. 1 slot, senior Paula Goetz and freshman Nicole Roc also claimed a 6-2 win for West Virginia by defeating Duquesne's Julianne Herman and Laurel Shymansky. The match also marked Roc's Mountaineer debut.
Rounding out doubles and playing in the No. 2 slot, junior Sofia Duran and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia completed the clean sweep for WVU, defeating Meredith Lee and Priyanka Mitta in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8).
Singles Recap
Starting in the No. 6 slot, sophomore Giovanna Caputo opened singles play in dominant fashion for the Mountaineers, claiming a two-set victory, 6-1, 6-1, over Meredith Lee.
Roc earned the start in the No. 3 slot for WVU. The Chicago, Illinois, native impressed in singles action by claiming a two-set victory, 6-4, 6-1, over Maddy Adams.
In the No. 5 slot, Courteau also claimed a two-set victory, 6-1, 6-4, over Margot Pessy. With the win, the Mountaineers claimed a win in six straight sets over the Dukes in singles play.
The first singles tiebreaker of the day came in the No. 2 slot, where Duran went head-to-head with Laurel Shymansky. After winning the first set, 6-3, the Guayaquil, Ecuador, native dropped the second set, 2-6, as Shymansky forced a super tiebreaker. Duran finished victorious, claiming the super tiebreaker, 6-4.
Looking to improve upon an already solid freshman season, Bovolskaia bagged the Mountaineers' eighth and final win of the day by claiming a two-set victory, 6-3, 7-5, over Aishwarya Kona in the No. 4 slot.
The only setback of the day came in the No. 1 slot, where Jordan was defeated in a tiebreaker by Julianne Herman. After winning the first set, 6-3, Herman narrowly won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). In the super tiebreaker, Herman bested Jordan, 10-5, to claim the final match of the day.
Looking Ahead
West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 3, at Pitt. The 37th edition of the Backyard Brawl is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania. Fans can follow Sunday's action from the results page, presented by Pitt.
