MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Kirah Koshinski of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named the Big 12 Conference co-Event Specialist of the Week.
Koshinski's honor is the first of the season for a WVU gymnast and her first career event specialist recognition. Previously, the Berwick, Pennsylvania, native was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 6, 2017, and the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week five times in 2016.
Today's recognition follows Koshinski's career showing on floor exercise on Feb. 17, as she won the event with a career-best 9.975 score. Earning a 10.0 from one judge, Koshinski became the eighth WVU gymnast to score 9.975 on floor and the first to do so since Kristen Macrie earned the mark on Feb. 2, 2002.
Koshinski's floor score helped push the Mountaineers to a season-best 49.5 event showing at the WVU Coliseum. The team total ranks No. 5 in program history and is WVU's best floor score since earning 49.575 on March 6, 2016.
In addition to her floor victory, Koshinski also placed third on vault with a 9.825. The Mountaineers finished with a 195.575 total, their second-highest score of the season, and finished second against Utah State (196.075), Pitt (195.1) and Cornell (193.075).
Koshinski currently ranks No. 12 nationally on floor with a 9.907 season average. She also ranks No. 22 on vault with a 9.861 average.
Denver's Lynnzee Brown was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week. Jade Degouveia shares the event specialist honor with Koshinski, and teammate Olivia Trautman earned the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award.
Up next, WVU competes twice in three days. First is a trip to Pittsburgh on Feb. 22, where the Mountaineers will compete against the Panthers and Ball State at 7 p.m. inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Mountaineers will conclude the weekend against No. 1 Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. It's the Wendy M. Roach Invitational, and the Mountaineers will wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. The WVU gymnasts stand with all those who have been affected by any form of cancer, and the Mountaineers ask fans to wear the color which represents the cancer of their choosing and to "Color the Coliseum for Cancer."
Once again, the Mountaineers will accept sundry item donations, such as socks, body lotion, nail polish and magazines, for donation to Morgantown's Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
A pre-meet cheer clinic will be held from 11 a.m. – noon Sunday. Registration is free for all participants under 13. Clinic participants will receive free admission to the meet, and pizza will be provided.
