MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Max Sear and junior Etienne Papineau sit in the top 10 for the West Virginia University golf team after two rounds of play at the Florida Gators Invitational at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida, on Saturday.
The two are part of a five-way tie for sixth play, which has West Virginia in a three-way tie for fourth place with No. 33 Florida and No. 19 North Florida. The Mountaineers finished the day at 278-286= 564 for four-over par through 36 holes. No. 3 Vanderbilt sits atop the team leaderboard at three under, followed by No. 29 Liberty in second at two-over par. No. 30 South Florida is in third place at three over.
"It was a solid effort by the guys today," coach Sean Covich said." We played really well in the morning, then it was a grind out there in the afternoon. This was our first 36-hole day since early October, so there's definitely a little mental fatigue at times but overall a solid day one."
Sear carded a trio of birdies on the back nine to finish the first round one-under par, then finished even par in the second. His two-round tally of 69-70=139 has him at one under. Papineau is also at one-under par with a 36-hole total of 139. He used a trio of birdies in the first round and two more in the second to also shoot 69-70.
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene posted five birdies in the first round on his way to a 69 for one-under par. He shot a 74 for four-over par in the second, ending the day at three over with 143 to tie for 30th place. Junior Philipp Matlari is also three-over par with a 143. He finished one over with a 71 in the first round before posting a 73 for two-over par in the second.
Sophomore Mark Goetz shot 76-75=151 to finish the day 11-over par. He is tied for 69th place.
The Mountaineers resume play for the third and final round on Sunday. They are paired with host Florida and North Florida in tee times start at 8:45 a.m.
