Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 15, 2019) – Highlighted by a dominant team performance in singles play, the West Virginia University tennis team (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) secured a home opening, 5-2 victory over Cleveland State on Friday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"I thought, overall, it was a good team effort. We were able to really play solid in singles and take control of the match across the board, not just with one player," said coach
Miha Lisac. "That helped us after the doubles point to really control the match well from then on out, and I was very happy with how we rebounded going from doubles play into the beginning of singles play, the energy we brought and how we started controlling the matches from then on."

Starting in the No. 3 slot, sophomore
Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior
Abigail Rosiello cruised to a dominant 6-1 victory over Isabella Spindler and Sian Payne to begin doubles play.
The Mountaineers dropped the second match in the No. 2 slot, where junior
Sofia Duran and freshman
Anastasiia Bovolskaia fell to Lara Prosenjak and Gaby Schoenberg, 6-3.
It came down to the No. 1 slot to decide the doubles point, where senior
Paula Goetz and freshman
Nicole Roc squared off with Kateryna Avram and Klara Mrcela. The duo from Cleveland State defeated Goetz and Roc, 7-5, in a back-and-forth match to claim the doubles point for the Vikings.

Despite dropping the doubles team point, West Virginia came out hot in singles play.
The first match to finish came from the No. 2 slot, where Duran went toe-to-toe with Klara Mrcela. The Guayaquil, Ecuador, native claimed a two-set victory, 6-4, 6-0, over Mrcela to tie the team score, 1-1.
Finishing moments after from the No. 4 slot, Bovolskaia continued her impressive freshman season by claiming a two-set victory, 6-1, 6-3, over Sian Payne to establish a 2-1 West Virginia lead.
Starting in the No. 1 slot, Goetz won the first set over Isabella Spindler, 6-3. The second set went back-and-forth until Goetz and Spindler tied everything up, 6-6. Goetz won the tiebreaker, 7-2, to take the match, 6-3, 7-6.
In the No. 3 slot, Roc had a chance to clinch a team victory for the Mountaineers against Lara Prosenjak. After winning the first set, 6-3, the Chicago native fell in the second set, 4-6. Roc was dominant in the third-set tiebreaker, winning 6-1, and helping bag WVU's fourth team point to claim the match.
Starting in the No. 5 slot, Courteau kept the Mountaineers rolling by grabbing a two-set victory, 6-4, 6-4, over Gaby Schoenberg to claim WVU's fifth singles win.
The final match to finish came from the No. 6 slot, where sophomore
Giovanna Caputo was defeated in two sets, 3-6, 1-6, by Kateryna Avram.
