MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
Following two road trips to start the season, the West Virginia University tennis team returns to Morgantown to host Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 15, and Akron on Saturday, Feb. 16.
"They're both very solid teams; we're familiar with them," said head coach
Miha Lisac. "We've seen them before. We competed against them in previous years. They will definitely be ready to play, they will definitely come out ready to compete against us, and they can be teams that can definitely show up and play good tennis. We'll have to be ready and prepared for that – Cleveland State and Akron, Friday and Saturday. So, we definitely have two good matches coming up this weekend."
Each day's action is scheduled to take place indoors at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, starting at 1 p.m. ET each day.
Meeting for the first time since the series began in 2016, Cleveland State enters Friday's matchup against WVU with an 3-4 record, with all three victories coming on the road. In 2016, the Mountaineers toppled the Vikings, 6-1, in Morgantown.
West Virginia last competed against Cleveland State at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational from Oct. 19-21, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers went 3-1 against the Vikings in singles play. Cleveland State held the advantage in doubles play, 2-0.
Akron enters Saturday's match against WVU with a 7-1 record but is scheduled to play at Duquesne on Friday, Feb. 15. In last year's regular-season meeting, the Mountaineers defeated the Zips, 5-2.
The Mountaineers last competed against the Zips at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational. WVU bested the Zips in singles play, 2-0. Akron was victorious in the only doubles match played in the fall.
Saturday's match against Akron also is alumni and Summit Tennis Academy appreciation day. A pizza party for all alumni Summit Tennis Academy members and staff is scheduled to take place prior to the start of doubles play from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
"It's very important to show our appreciation to the alumni and the people of Summit," said Lisac. "We have a lot of people who support our program and follow our program. It's a very important event for us to recognize and do something for them. We're looking forward to having the people out and supporting us on Saturday."
