WVU Retains Two National Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team continues to rank nationally on vault and floor exercise in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (11-4, 0-3) continue to rank No. 10 on floor exercise and boast a 49.167 season average. WVU also ranks No. 22 on vault with a 48.854 average.
WVU did not move in the overall rankings and continues to sit at No. 27 for the third consecutive week with an improved season average of 195.117.
Senior Kirah Koshinski is nationally ranked No. 15 on floor exercise and vault with respective season averages of 9.896 and 9.867. Classmate Jaquie Tun moved up 12 spots to No. 29 on floor with an average of 9.875.
Regionally, the Mountaineers continue to rank No. 3 in the Southeast. WVU also ranks No. 3 on vault and floor and sits at No. 5 on balance beam (48.596 avg.) and No. 6 on uneven bars (48.5 avg.).
Koshinski ranks a team-high No. 3 on vault, and Tun follows at No. 21 (9.767 avg.). The Berwick, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 5 on floor, where Tun, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, ranks No. 8.
Freshman Esperanza Abarca paces WVU on uneven bars and balance beam and ranks No. 11 on bars (9.796 avg.) and No. 12 on beam (9.775 avg.). Tun follows at No. 22 (9.746 avg.) on bars, and junior Julia Merwin ranks No. 24 (9.742 avg.). On beam, freshman Rachel Hornung ranks No. 19 (9.758 avg.), and junior Erica Fontaine ranks No. 25 (9.712 avg.).
Junior Abby Kaufman ranks No. 10 in the all-around with a 38.754 average. Hornung and Koshinski follow at No. 14 (38.6 avg.) and No. 17 (38.25 avg.), respectively.
WVU ranks No. 4 overall in the Big 12 Conference and on each event but floor exercise, where the Mountaineers sit at No. 3.
Koshinski ranks No. 5 on floor and is followed by Tun at No. 8. Koshinski also ranks No. 7 on vault, and Kaufman ranks No. 10 in the all-around.
The Mountaineers earned their fourth sweep of the season with a winning, 195.25 showing at Penn on Feb. 10. WVU hit 24-for-24 for the second time in as many weeks and the third time this season. Tun finished first on floor with a career-high 9.925, while sophomore McKenna Linnen placed first on beam with a career-best 9.85. Kaufman won vault with a 9.75 score and finished second in the all-around with a 38.825 total. Merwin paced WVU on bars with a career-high 9.825.
WVU returns to the WVU Coliseum for a quad meet against Pitt, Utah State and Cornell on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. It's a Heart Healthy Meet, and a free Zumba class will be offered on the WVU Coliseum concourse pre-meet. Additionally, heart-shaped stress balls will be given to the first 500 fans.
