Fall Classic a Success

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Turkey team trumped the Pilgrim team for the third consecutive year at the West Virginia University gymnastics team's annual Fall Classic Intrasquad, held Nov. 19 at Cary Gym.
The Fall Classic is held to put the gymnasts under pressure just weeks away from the start of a new season. Combined, WVU hit 37-of-40 routines.
"Overall, we got good feedback from everyone in attendance that the team looked great," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "They were nervous, but that's what we wanted. It is impossible to recreate an atmosphere of a meet, and that's OK. This meet is held to get all the jitters out.
"We are excited with where we are right now, but we still have a lot of work left to do. Our goal is to be ready for those first two road meets because road scores count more for us. We want to be ready when we get to those meets. It should be automatic walking into them at that point, and yesterday, was a big step toward that."
On Monday, the student-athletes split into two squads. The Turkey team featured seniors Abby Kaufman and Julia Merwin, junior McKenna Linnen and sophomores Esperanza Abarca and Kendra Combs, as well as freshmen Maya Kraus, Kayla Yancey and Abbie Pierson.
Additionally, seniors Chloe Cluchey and Erica Fontaine, juniors Sydney Marler and Michelle Waldron, sophomores Taylor Sell and Rachel Hornung participated on the Pilgrim side, along with freshmen Emily Holmes-Hackerd and Kianna Yancey.
The Mountaineers will continue to train in Cary Gym, as they work toward their 2020 season opener.
"This team's attitude was great throughout the intrasquad, and the energy was up all day," Butts said. "They are having fun, and I can see that they're already a close-knit team. We still have a lot of work to do, and that's OK. We can't coast until January; we're going to have to work on our consistency, so we aren't playing catchup."
WVU opens the season with two straight meets away from Morgantown. The Mountaineers travel to State College, Pennsylvania, for a meet against Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m. ET, before flying west to Ames, Iowa, for their first Big 12 Conference meet of the season against Iowa State on Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
