BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – With just one round officially in the books, the No. 25 West Virginia University golf team sits in second place at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club on Monday.
Golfers played through a steady rain for most of the day, slowing play. Officials blew the horn at 6:30 p.m., calling for players to complete their holes before heading in. Due to the change, Tuesday's play will begin in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with players finishing the remaining holes of the second round and heading directly into the third.
WVU shot a six-over-par 294 as a team to sit two strokes back from leader Florida Atlantic, who finished the first round with a 292 for four-over. Unofficially, the Mountaineers are five-over-par and one stroke behind the Owls. Southern Miss is in third at 19 over par.
Junior Matthew Sharpstene shot one-under-par in the first round to tie for fourth. He registered a bogey and a pair of birdies on the front nine before adding a pair of each on the back nine to card a 71.
Junior Mark Goetz had three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey on the front nine to sit even-par at the turn before carding a bogey and a pair of birdies to shoot a one-under-par 71 and also tie for fourth.
Senior Etienne Papineau shot three-over to finish the first round with a 75, tying for 18th place. Unofficially, he's two-under-par in the second round and has moved into sixth place.
Classmate Philipp Matlari had a double-bogey and a birdie to make the turn at one-over in the first round but struggled on the back nine and finished with a five-over-par 77. He was tied for 27th at the end of the first but has unofficially moved into the top 15 in the second.
Freshman Nico Lang had a bogey and birdie to sit even-par through nine, but also struggled on the back nine and registered three bogeys and a double-bogey as he shot five-over-par with a 77 in the first round. He also was tied for 27th at the conclusion of the first.
Playing as an individual, junior Logan Perkins had a trio of bogeys but added a birdie on the back nine to end the first round with a two-over-par 74. Freshman Christian Boyd managed three birdies in the first but had six bogeys and two double-bogeys as he finished at seven-over with a 79. Sophomore Kurtis Grant shot a seven-over-par 79 in the first round while freshman Trent Tipton carded an 83 for 11 over.
West Virginia is paired with Washington State and UConn on Tuesday.
