Mountaineers Cap Day One at The Tavistock

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Logan Perkins leads the way for the No. 26 West Virginia University golf team through 18 holes at The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Florida, on Sunday. The Mountaineers and UCF are hosting the event at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.
Perkins balanced five birdies and five bogeys to finish even-par with a 72. He sits just inside the top 20, finishing 19th after one round of play.
WVU shot a team score of 303 for 15-over-par and is in 15th place after one round. Cohost UCF leads the pack at eight under par, followed by Florida at three-under. No. 38 LSU and Cal are tied for third place at one-under-par.
Freshman Nico Lang registered a trio of birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey put him at four-over-par. He carded a 76 to tie for 56th place.
Junior Matthew Sharpstene struggled early, starting his round off with a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey. He added two birdies just before the turn, but triple-bogeyed back-to-back holes. Sharpstene recovered by carding birdies on four of the last six holes and finished at five-over-par. His score of 77 puts him in a tie for 61st place.
Senior Etienne Papineau shot a six-over-par 78, tying for 64th place. Junior Mark Goetz was eight-over-par, carding an 80 to tie for 70th place.
West Virginia will tee off for the second round starting at 9:15 a.m. on Monday. The Mountaineers are paired with UNLV and South Carolina. Additionally, senior Philipp Matlari, sophomore Kurtis Grant and freshman Christian Boyd will compete in the Musketeers Classic starting at 8:30 a.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
