WVU Floor Lineup No. 5 Nationally

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team moves into the third week of the 2019 season nationally ranked on two events in the Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (4-2, 0-1) are the fifth-best team nationally on floor exercise, boasting a 49.163 season average. The four teams ranked ahead of WVU – No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 Utah – are all former National Champions.
WVU also ranks No. 11 on vault with a 49.0 average. Additionally, after debuting at No. 22 last week, the Mountaineers sit just outside of the top-25 team rankings and check-in at No. 26 (194.825 avg.)
Individually, seniors Kirah Koshinski and Jaquie Tun are nationally ranked on two events each. Koshinski, a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, ranks No. 10 on floor (9.912 avg.) and No. 19 on vault (9.863 avg.). Tun, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, ranks No. 24 on floor (9.875 avg.) and No. 41 on vault (9.825 avg.).
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 3 in the Southeast Region. WVU checks-in at No. 2 on floor and vault, No. 6 on balance beam (48.513 avg.) and No. 7 on uneven bars (48.15 avg.).
Koshinski sits at No. 3 in the region on vault and floor. She also ranks No. 12 in the all-around (38.25 avg.).
Tun follows Koshinski at No. 5 on vault and No. 6 on floor. She also ranks No. 16 on uneven bars (9.762 avg.).
Five Mountaineers are ranked on vault and floor. Junior Julia Merwin ranks No. 11 on vault with a 9.787 average. Sophomore Michelle Waldron follows at No. 21 (9.737 avg.), and freshman Rachel Hornung ranks No. 22 (9.725 avg.).
On floor, sophomore McKenna Linnen ranks No. 15 (9.825 avg.). Junior Erica Fontaine follows at No. 19 (9.787 avg.), and classmate Abby Kaufman ranks No. 22 (9.763 avg.).
Hornung paces WVU on beam and ranks No. 17 (9.75 avg.). Fontaine follows at No. 22 (9.712 avg.).
Freshman Esperanza Abarca continues to pace the Mountaineers on uneven bars and ranks No. 13 regionally with a 9.8 average. Kaufman sits at No. 8 in the all-around (38.65), and Hornung follows at No. 9 (38.6 avg.).
The Mountaineers rank No. 3 overall in the Big 12 Conference. WVU ranks as high as No. 2 on floor, is No. 3 on beam and vault and No. 4 on bars.
Three gymnasts are ranked on floor, paced by Koshinski who sits at No. 2. Tun ranks No. 4, and Linnen follows at No. 9. Koshinski also ranks No. 7 on vault. In the all-around, Kaufman ranks No. 7, Hornung No. 8 and Koshinski No. 9.
The Mountaineers earned three wins with a first place, 195.5 showing at Pitt on Jan. 12, defeating the Panthers (194.75), Utah State (194.6) and Eastern Michigan (192.7). Koshinski finished first on vault (9.925) and floor (9.9), a title she shared with Tun. Abarca finished second on bars (9.8), and Hornung placed fourth on beam (9.7). Kaufman placed second in the all-around with a 38.925 total.
WVU closes its season-opening road swing this weekend, as the Mountaineers compete at Air Force, with Cortland, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. ET.
