Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team concluded its 2018 season with a loss to TCU, 5-1, in the first round of the Big 12 Championship on Thursday, at the Texas Tennis Center, in Austin, Texas.
 
WVU (7-14, 1-8 Big 12) began the match by dropping the doubles point, as the Horned Frogs took two of the three matches for an early 1-0 lead. On the second court, Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran fell to Alexis Pereira and Donika Bashota, 6-3. Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz evened the doubles matches at one apiece, besting TCU's Marie Norris and Stevie Kennedy, 6-4. However, Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo fell to TCU's Aleksa Cveticanin and Aleksandra Zenovka, 6-4, on the third court to give the Horned Frogs the 1-0 advantage.
 
"We brought a good fight today," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "We started the match better in doubles today than we did on Sunday. We put ourselves in a position to even up the score in doubles and, unfortunately, that got away from us."
 
Then, the Horned Frogs won four of the first five singles matches to claim the contest. At No. 2, Courteau lost to Bashota, 6-2 and 6-0. Jordan fell to Cveticanin, 6-3 and 6-3, on the first court, as TCU took a commanding 3-0 lead.
 
Duran gave WVU its lone point of the day with a win over Meredith Roberts in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3, on the fourth court.
 
The Horned Frogs clinched the match by winning two contests at the same time to make the score, 5-1. After dropping a first set tiebreak, Caputo fell in the second set to Tedford, while Choo was bested by Bashota to end the match.
 
The match between Goetz and No. 124 Zenovka was abandoned heading into the third set, with Goetz winning the first set and falling in a second set tiebreak, 7-2.      
 
"We are getting to the point where we are putting ourselves in a good position against TCU, that was good to see," Lisac said. "Now, we need more belief and more execution in the right moments."
 
Thursday's match marked the conclusion of the Mountaineers' 2017-18 season. It also was the final career match for seniors Yvon Martinez and Lyn Yuen Choo. Choo finished her career tied for No. 15 in career singles victories and No. 14 in overall wins.
