MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Four members of the West Virginia University women's tennis team have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Senior Yvon Martinez (petroleum and natural gas engineering), juniors Paula Goetz (industrial engineering) and Abigail Rosiello (immunology and medical microbiology) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while senior Lyn Yuen Choo (professional pharmacy) earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
Of the 30 women to make the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Goetz and Rosiello were just two of eight student-athletes to have a perfect grade point average (GPA).
The award marks the second consecutive year that Goetz has been named to the first team. Choo also earned her fourth recognition on Tuesday. She was named to the first team in 2015 and 2016 and listed on the second team in 2017. It also marks the second-time Martinez has earned an Academic Big 12 honor after being named to the second team in 2016.
It also is the fifth straight season that at least three student-athletes were named to the first team.
"It's exciting that we have so many student-athletes earn Big 12 awards for academics. It speaks to the work that they do throughout the year and the dedication that they have not only on the court, but to their studies as well," coach Miha Lisac said of the announcement. "That is a credit to them. They do an outstanding amount of work being student-athletes, and it's good to see them stay dedicated to the academic portion as well.
"Furthermore, the academic staff works with these girls on a daily basis throughout the year, and it is an award that goes to the student-athletes themselves, but it also is an award that goes toward the whole academic department and everything that they do with our student-athletes."
Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and have participated in their team's scheduled events to qualify. Student-athletes can also qualify if they have maintained a 3.0 GPA in the previous two semesters and fulfill the participation requirement.
