Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team started strong in doubles play with a win on court one, but eventually fell to No. 35 Old Dominion, 4-0, Sunday morning, at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown.
"We showed a couple of good things today," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "One of the most important things that we can take from this match is that if we are a little bit more comfortable in closing situations and if we have a little bit more belief then we will be right there."
WVU started (4-4) the match by dropping the doubles point, as ODU claimed two of three doubles matches. On the first court,
Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran earned the victory after besting Nataliia Vlasova and Victoria Olivarez, 6-2. The senior pair of
Lyn Yuen Choo and
Yvon Martinez fell to Holly Hutchinson and Natalya Malenko, 6-1. The Monarchs then claimed the doubles point, as
Anne-Sophie Courteau and
Giovanna Caputo dropped the match on the third court, 6-4.
"In doubles, we showed that we can definitely give ourselves an opportunity," Lisac said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't close the number three doubles out and that became a huge turning point."
The Mountaineers would then drop the first three singles matches, giving the Monarchs the 4-0 victory. At the No. 1 slot, Jordan fell to ODU's Hutchinson, 6-3 and 6-1, to give the Monarchs the 2-0 lead. ODU's Starodubtseva defeated
Anne-Sophie Courteau in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1, at No. 2. After winning the first set, 6-1, Duran dropped the second set, 1-6, and fell in the third set, 3-6, as Old Dominion clinched the 4-0 team win.
The match between Choo and Vlasova was abandoned in the tiebreaker of the second set after Vlasova won the first set. Additionally, Caputo was in the first set on court five vs. Malenko when the match was abandoned.
Abigail Rosiello also led 3-1 in the first set at No. 6 when the match was abandoned.
West Virginia will be back in action on Sunday, March 10, as the Mountaineers take on Maryland in College Park, Maryland. The match is slated to begin at noon and will take place at the Maryland Tennis Facility.
