Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team won two singles matches, but ultimately fell to VCU, 4-2, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on Sunday.
WVU opened the match by dropping the doubles point, as the Rams were able to best the Mountaineers in two of the three contests. Sophomores
Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran fell on court No. 1, dropping the match, 6-0. On the third court, the freshmen tandem of
Giovanna Caputo and
Anne-Sophie Courteau dropped the match, 6-3, to give VCU the 1-0 team lead over the Mountaineers.
The match between senior
Lyn Yuen Choo and
Paula Goetz and VCU's Noumea Witmus and Paola Delgado was abandoned with Witmus and Delgado leading, 5-4.
"We definitely showed more resilience today, we showed a different approach today," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "Doubles was big. Unfortunately it didn't click in doubles two days in a row and that hurt us both days and especially today. Looking forward, we are looking to improve on the areas that didn't go as well."
The Mountaineers stumbled out of the gate in singles play as Courteau fell to VCU's Delgado, 6-2 and 6-0, on the second court. Then, the Rams took a 3-0 team lead as Anna Rasmussen dropped Jordan in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1, at No. 1.
On the fourth court, Goetz claimed the first point for the Mountaineers, besting Melissa Ifidzhen in a dramatic second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, to win in two sets, 6-3 and 7-6.
After winning the first set, 6-3, Choo dropped a second-set tiebreaker, 7-3. In the third set, with the Mountaineers facing the clinching point, she rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the third set, 7-5, at No. 3. The win cut VCU's lead to 3-2, with two matches still in play.
Later on, Witmus clinched the match for the Rams when she defeated Caputo in two sets, 7-6 and 6-0, at No. 5. Duran and VCU's Sofia Sualehe were in the third set when the match was called due to clinch rules.
The Mountaineers will welcome George Washington at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on Saturday, Feb. 10, with the match set to begin at 1 p.m. Free pizza and posters will be available for all fans in attendance.
