Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team fell to James Madison, 6-1, in the 2018 season opener on Saturday at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"Overall, we had some positive spots today," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "Regardless of the fact that it was a tough day, we had a few players who were able to find a way to pull through."
The Dukes began the match with a 1-0 advantage after winning two of three contests to secure the doubles point. WVU's lone doubles win came when the freshmen tandem of Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo came from behind to top Diane Flement and Dylan Owens in the tiebreak set, 7-6 (7), on the third court.
Sophomores Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran fell to Elizabeth Norman and Jona Roka in a close match, 7-5, at the No. 1 position. On the second court, Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo fell to Anna Makarova and Emma Petersen, 6-0.
Later on, the Dukes won five of the six singles matches against WVU. Choo earned the Mountaineers lone win of the day after coming back from a first-set tiebreaker loss to win the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-4, at the third position. On court No. 1, Jordan fell to JMU's Roka, 6-3 and 6-2, to give the Dukes the 2-0 advantage. JMU would make the score 3-0 as Petersen topped Caputo in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, on the fourth court.
