Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team swept doubles and won the first three singles matches, as the squad rolled past Towson, 5-2, Sunday afternoon, at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown.
WVU started (4-3) the match off strong, sweeping the Tigers (3-4) in doubles play for the 1-0 advantage.
Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran powered past Towson's duo of Renate Van Oorschodt and A.J. Gomer on the first court by a score of 6-1.
Paula Goetz and
Lyn Yuen Choo then clinched the doubles point for the Mountaineers, as they bested Lucy Williams and Yevgeniya Schusterman, 6-2, on the second court.
Anne-Sophie Courteau and
Giovanna Caputo completed the sweep on the third court, topping Lucy Gloninger and Barbora Vasilkova, in a tiebreaking set, 7-6 (5).
"Today, starting with doubles and going into the first round of singles, it was best approach that we had so far going into a match," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "We had a lot of intensity in doubles, we finished strong in doubles and we had the first four players came out into singles had high intensity. That's what really got us over the hump right away from the beginning of the match."
Choo began singles play with a dominating performance on the third court, defeating A. J. Gomer, 6-1 and 6-0, to give WVU a 2-0 lead. Duran followed in Choo's footsteps, only giving up two games on her respective court, besting Schusterman in straight sets to push the Mountaineers lead to 3-0 on the scoreboard.
Courteau claimed her first match-clinching victory of the season, as she defeated Williams, 6-1 and 6-1, at the No. 2 slot.
With Courteau's victory, WVU claimed the win with three matches left to play. However, Towson ended up winning two of the final three matches of the afternoon to make the final score 4-3.
After dropping a first set tiebreaker, Jordan would lose 1-6 in the second to give the Tigers their first win of the day. On court No. 5, Goetz won the first set 6-1, but was forced to retire due to an injury in the second set.
At No. 6, Caputo fell in the first set, 4-6, but rallied in the second, winning 6-2, to force a third set. In the tiebreak, she overcame an early deficit to tie the set at seven apiece. Caputo continued to put up a fight, eventually claiming the tiebreaker by a score of 10-8 for her second straight victory.
West Virginia is back in action on Sunday, March 4, as the Mountaineers take on Old Dominion in Morgantown. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m., at the Summit Tennis Academy.
