WVU Faces First Road Tests In Akron
February 15, 2018 12:08 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will travel to Akron, Ohio, for a pair of matches against Akron, on Feb. 16, and East Tennessee State, on Feb. 17.
Friday's match against the Zips is slated to begin at 1 p.m., while Saturday's match versus the Buccaneers begins at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio.
"They are both solid teams," fifth-year head coach Miha Lisac said. "We have competed against Akron more often than East Tennessee State, but we know both teams fairly well. The challenges on the other side of the court remain the same. The biggest challenge for us is on our side of the court, is to sustain the work that we've done so far in preparation and know in competition."
Friday's contest between the Zips and the Mountaineers marks the 15th time the two schools have met, with WVU holding a 10-4 all-time mark. Last season, the Mountaineers recorded a 4-3 victory over the Zips in Morgantown at the Summit Tennis Academy.
Akron will enter the match with a 5-4 record on the season after falling to Tennessee, 4-0, and besting Walsh College, 7-0, last weekend. Freshman Miruna Vasilescu leads the way for the Zips this spring with a 6-0, record including an unblemished 3-0 at the No. 3 spot. The doubles pair of Luisa Echeverry and Vasilescu pace Akron with a 4-0 record this spring.
On Saturday, WVU will square off with ETSU in a neutral site matchup. While the two teams have competed against one another at various fall tournaments, Sunday will mark the first time since 2006 that the Mountaineers will face the Bucs in dual play. West Virginia holds an all-time record of 7-4 against ETSU in a series that began in 1984.
Saturday's match will be the first of the weekend for East Tennessee, who will face Akron on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Bucs enter the match with a 2-3 record after besting Lincoln Memorial University, 7-0, last Thursday. Ioanna Markesini leads ETSU this spring with a 2-1 record at the No. 1 slot. Five doubles pairs have registered one win for the Bucs.
Senior Lyn Yuen Choo and junior Paula Goetz lead the Mountaineers in dual action, with each registering two wins a piece. The two also tie for the team lead with one doubles win on the year. The freshmen pair of Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau also have picked up a win in doubles play this season.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers used a dramatic come from behind win to topple George Washington, 4-3, earning their first win of the season. After trailing 3-1, Courteau and Sofía Duran picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, to tie the match. Caputo completed the comeback when she dropped Kamilla Beisenova in two sets, 6-1 and 7-5, on the sixth court. For her efforts, Caputo was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
