Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team used three straight wins in singles play to overcome a 3-1 deficit and top George Washington, 4-3, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on Saturday.
"It was a battle," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "Each and every player today kept up their intensity, they kept up their fight and they kept pushing forwards. The end result shows that. Today we found every opportunity to give ourselves a chance to come through and we did."
WVU opened the match by dropping the doubles point, as the Colonials were able to best the Mountaineers in two of the three contests.
Paula Goetz and
Lyn Yuen Choo earned the win for the Mountaineers, besting Marie Louise Decamps and Julia Herlogsson, 6-4, on the second court.
However, WVU was not able to hold on as the Colonials won the next two doubles contests.
Christina Jordan and
Sofia Duran dropped the match at No. 1 to Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu, 6-4. The Mountaineers then surrendered the doubles point after the freshman pair of
Anne-Sophie Courteau and
Giovanna Caputo fell, 6-3.
The Mountaineers stumbled out of the gate in singles play as Jordan fell to GW's Siopacha in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2, on the first court to give the Colonials the 2-0 lead over the Mountaineers. WVU secured its first point of the day as Goetz topped Sara Grubac, 6-3 and 6-3, in straight sets at No. 4, to cut the lead to 2-1.
On the third court, Choo suffered her first setback of the spring, as she fell to Bayraktaroglu. She dropped the first set 4-6, before faltering in the second set tiebreaker to end the match. The loss gave George Washington a 3-1 lead over the Mountaineers.
After besting GW's Decamps in the first set 6-4, Courteau fell in the second set, 2-6, to force a third set to settle the match. Facing the clinch point for the Colonials, she rallied from a 4-4 score to win the set at 6-4, and the match on the second court. Directly following the match at No. 2, Duran dropped Herlogsson in straight sets at No. 5 to tie the match at three-all. Caputo completed the comeback for the Mountaineers when she topped Kamilla Beisenova in two sets, 6-1 and 7-5, on the sixth court to give West Virginia the 4-3 win.
Up next, the Mountaineers will travel to Akron, Ohio, for a pair of matches at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. WVU will face Akron on Friday, Feb. 16, before taking on East Tennessee State on Saturday, Feb. 17, in a neutral site matchup.
