Gondrezick Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following her performance at the Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, The Bahamas, redshirt sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick of the West Virginia University women's basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Gondrezick scored a WVU career-high 22 points and added six steals against No. 12 Iowa on Nov. 23, becoming the first Mountaineer to have at least six steals in a game since Chania Ray and Tynice Martin in Dec. 2016. The Benton Harbor, Michigan, native, averaged 19.5 points and 4.5 steals per game in WVU's two games at the Junkanoo Jam, which included an 81-39 win over Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 24, where Gondrezick tied for the team lead with 17 points. For her efforts, she earned all-tournament team honors.

West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 2, when the Mountaineers host Missouri in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Tipoff at the WVU Coliseum is set for 5 p.m.

This Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia will host Missouri on Sunday, Dec. 2, in a 5 p.m. tipoff … the game is part of this year's SEC/Big 12 Challenge … the Mountaineers will host their first "Dress Like Mike" night … fans who don blue track pants and a white polo, like coach Mike Carey, will receive $1 admission and a voucher for Coca-Cola and a hot dog at the concession stand.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: No. 25/20 West Virginia traveled to Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas, for a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday … on Friday, the Mountaineers dropped an 84-81 heartbreaker to No. 12/14 Iowa at Gateway Christian Academy in Bimini … redshirt sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick led the team with 22 points… senior forward Naomi Davenport had 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double … WVU rebounded on Saturday with an 81-39 win over Eastern Kentucky … Gondrezick and redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin tied for the team lead with 17 points each.

Notes: West Virginia moved into the AP Top 25 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 25 with 70 points … it marks WVU's first appearance in the poll since Jan. 29, 2018 … the Mountaineers also moved up five spots in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll, jumping from No. 25 to No. 20 … Gondrezick averaged 19.5 points and 4.5 steals per game to earn Junkanoo Jam Bimini Division All-Tournament Team honors … Gondrezick had a career-high 22 points and six steals in the loss to No. 12 Iowa … her six steals is the most by a Mountaineer since Chania Ray and Tynice Martin did so against TCU in December of 2016 … senior forward Naomi Davenport had 16 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa for a double-double … it was her second double-double of the season and the eighth of her career … the Mountaineers will participate in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge for the third time in 2018 … WVU is 2-0, claiming wins over Ole Miss (66-61) in 2016 and Texas A&M (71-56) in 2017.

This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia (1-2, 1-1) does not compete this week … looking ahead, WVU travels to Pitt on Dec. 15 for a 7 p.m. dual against the Panthers ... the longest-running series in WVU history, West Virginia has topped Pitt four times in the last five seasons, including last year ... following the Backyard Brawl, the Mountaineers welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies to the WVU Coliseum on Dec. 19, at 7 p.m., before the team departs for a holiday break.

Notes: The 2018-19 campaign marks the program's 95th season … 25 newcomers joined 10 letterwinners from last year's squad … redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt is the lone Mountaineer to check-in to this week's rankings at 133 pounds … the 2018 NCAA qualifier sits at No. 16 by the Open Mat, No. 19 by FloWrestling and No. 20 by Intermat … sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) and freshman Caleb Rea (133) each sport a team-best nine victories on the season, followed by redshirt freshman Noah Adams (197) and redshirt junior Zachary Moore (157) with eight ... redshirt senior Christian Monserrat also leads the team with a perfect 3-0 dual record at 149 pounds.

This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers ended their 2018 season with an 11-19 mark and a 2-14 record in Big 12 play.

Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia dropped a pair of conference matches on the road last week, falling in four sets at No. 25 Baylor on Nov. 21, and dropping a three-set match at No. 5 Texas on Nov. 24 … WVU finished the week hitting .124 with 74 kills and 10 total blocks … a trio of Mountaineers tallied double-digit kills on the week, as junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the team with 22 kills, averaging 3.14 per set … freshman setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 60 assists to average 8.57 per set last week, while sophomore defensive specialist Alexa Hasting led the floor defense with 33 digs to average 4.71 per set.

Notes: Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo was named to the 2018 Academic All-District 2 Volleyball Team on Nov. 15, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) … the honor was her first career district award, and she advanced to the CoSIDA Academic All-America National ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honors will be selected … DeMeo finished the season with 1.27 blocks per set, ranking third all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore and tying for 10th overall in a single season in program history … she also posted 118 total blocks on the year to rank fifth all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore … freshman middle blocker Kristina Jordan finished second on the team with 0.94 blocks per set, ranking fifth all-time by a Mountaineer freshman … Jordan also recorded 101 total blocks on the year, tying for second all-time by a Mountaineer freshman … Zerwas led the team with 881 assists in her freshman campaign, averaging 9.18 per set to rank fourth all-time by a Mountaineer freshman … she also ranks fourth all-time by a Mountaineer freshman in total assists.

This Week in Rifle: Senior Ginny Thrasher, junior Morgan Phillips and sophomore Sarah Osborn of the No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will shoot at the 2018 USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships, set for Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
