MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced today the 2019 gymnastics schedule.
The Mountaineers' schedule features five home meets at the WVU Coliseum, three in the month of February. WVU will compete against nine teams who ended the 2018 season ranked in the top 25 of the Road to Nationals Rankings, including national runner-up and reigning Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma.
"We have a lot of great competition," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "We're only as good as our competition, and that will be tested this year. We're very excited to host each of the Big 12 Conference teams at the WVU Coliseum this year, too.
"It's a tough schedule and a tough travel schedule. It's going to be trial by fire, but this team is ready and knows what is coming. This is our chance to advance this program and make us true road warriors."
WVU opens the season with three straight meets away from Morgantown. The first takes the Mountaineers to Mexico, as they will compete against Michigan and Iowa State at the Cancun Classic on Friday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. EST.
The Mountaineers will then travel north to Pitt for a quad meet against the Panthers, Utah State and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., before flying west to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for a meet at Air Force, with Cortland, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. EST.
"I like that we start the season on the road," Butts added. "We definitely have a lot of away meets this season, but they can only help our regional qualifying score as we progress toward postseason."
WVU opens its home season on Sunday, Jan. 27, against Kent State and George Washington at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers follow the opener with the second meeting of the season against Iowa State, as the teams, alongside Big 12 foe Denver, compete on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m.
A trip to Philadelphia on Sunday, Feb. 10, pits the Mountaineers against host Penn, Temple and Bridgeport, with competition set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 17 for a quad meet against Utah State, Cornell and Pitt at 1 p.m.
WVU will compete in two meets in three days the weekend of Feb. 22 – 24. First up is the Mountaineers' second trip of the season to Pittsburgh on Feb. 22 and a tri-meet against Pitt and Ball State at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers will then play host to Oklahoma in their conference regular-season finale on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m.
Meets at Ohio State on Saturday, March 2, and Arizona State, with BYU, on Wednesday, March 13, precede the Mountaineers' regular-season finale at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, March 17, against NC State, Ohio State and Penn State at 2 p.m.
"We have numerous top-25 teams coming to Morgantown this year and a lot of tough competition," Butts said. "Home meets at the WVU Coliseum are so much fun for this team. We're going to have to battle at home this year. The 2019 season will demand our focus, and I'm excited to watch this team rise to the challenge."
The Mountaineers will compete at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship on Saturday, March 23. Information about the conference meet will be announced at a later date.
The NCAA Regional Championships will be held April 4-6 at the following sites: Michigan, Georgia, LSU and Oregon State. The 2019 season marks the debut of the new NCAA postseason format, featuring four regional sites instead of six and a super-regional competition on the third day of competition.
The 2019 NCAA National Championships will be held April 19-20, at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Mountaineers finished the 2018 season at 13-13 (0-6 Big 12) and qualified for the 2018 NCAA University Park Regional Championships. Throughout the year, WVU earned four rankings in the Road to Nationals Rankings and hit as high as No. 16, its best regular-season ranking since 2013. The Mountaineers did not count a fall until the final meet of the season.
Butts returns for his eighth season and will be joined by 11th-year associate head coach Travis Doak and assistant coach Kaylyn Millick, back for her fourth season with WVU. Eleven Mountaineers return, including seniors Kirah Koshinski, a three-time All-American, Carly Galpin and Jaquie Tun.
