MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Athletic Communications Office was honored earlier this month in Orlando, Florida, at the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Workshop, capturing nine awards for Excellence in Publications, including five best in the nation awards. The nine publications awards WVU received from CoSIDA rank as the second-most earned among Division I schools and most in the Big 12 Conference.
Earning best in the nation awards were the 2016 football guide, the 2016 football poster, the cover for the Bob Huggins 800th win program, the 2016-17 women’s basketball guide and WVU’s football game notes.
The 2016-17 men’s basketball game day program won second in the nation as did the 2017 gymnastics poster in the winter/spring poster category.
The 2016-17 women’s basketball poster won third in the nation, while the bowl guide for the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl earned third in the nation honors as well.
In the writing contest, Shannon McNamara, WVU’s associate director of athletic communications, captured the CoSIDA District 2 award with her story of “Red, White, Gold and Blue” on her story on Olympic Gold medalist Ginny Thrasher.
The #WVU125 football campaign last fall took bronze honors in the digital campaign category of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) “Best Of” awards ceremony, also held earlier this month in Orlando. The award-winning concept interacted with Mountaineer fans on social media all across the globe and featured a WVU125 flag campaign along with a special microsite featuring classic video highlights, stories, pictures, and fan vote tournaments for the best moments in program history.
WVU is also one of three finalists for the NACDA ‘Best Game Day Technology Award’ that promotes the ways technology plays a role in the fan experience. West Virginia’s highlights in 2016-17 included the cell phone light show at the men’s basketball game vs. Baylor, McDonald’s Twitpics promotion on the videoboard during media timeouts and interactive use of the Experience app at home events. The award will be presented later this fall.
