Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 15 Baylor as the Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision on Sunday at the WVU Tennis Courts.
WVU (4-11, 0-5 Big 12) dropped back-to-back doubles matches, allowing Baylor to take the doubles point and the early lead. On the No. 3 court, BU's Rhiann Newborn and Jessica Hinojosa dropped WVU's Abigail Rosiello and Sofia Duran, 6-1, to open the match. Baylor’s Blair Shankle and Karina Traxler would then best the Mountaineer tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Christina Jordan, 6-3, on court No. 1 to secure the doubles point for the Lady Bears.
Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz were leading the duo of Elizabeth Profit and Theresa Van Zyl, 5-3, when the match was abandoned due to clinch rules.
“At No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Kaja, Christina, Paula and Lyn Yuen, I thought they started off pretty well,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “Paula and Lyn Yuen had opportunities to close out their match. Both of those teams battled pretty well. Kaja and Christina came up a little short at the end of that set.”
The Lady Bears went on to secure the first three singles' matches of the contest to claim the 4-0 victory. Profit would begin the singles matches by besting Mrgole in two sets, 6-1 and 6-3, at the No. 1 slot. On court No. 5, Duran fell in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, to extend BU’s team lead to 3-0.
Rosiello fell in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3, as Traxler clinched the match for the Lady Bears.
The matches at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, were all in their second set when halted after Traxler secured the win for the Bears.
“We had some positives on the day,” Lisac continued “We are definitely looking to build upon this weekend. The play and the approach was a little more consistent on Friday, but we still had some positives come out of today.”
West Virginia will return to action next weekend, with a match against No. 33 TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, April 7, and No. 6 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday, April 9. Friday’s match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., while Sunday’s first serve is set for 11:30 a.m. ET. Full recaps from both matches will be available at WVUsports.com.
