WVU Opens Big 12 Home Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University tennis team returns to Morgantown for a pair of matches against No. 21 Texas on Friday, March 31, and No. 15 Baylor on Sunday, April 2.
Friday’s match will take place at the Ridgeview Racquet Club and is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. Weather permitting, Sunday’s contest will be held at the WVU Tennis Courts, located at the WVU Coliseum complex.
“Overall, we are looking forward to a couple of things this weekend,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “Especially being at home again and playing either at Ridgeview or outdoors depending on the weather, but in front of our home fans. We are looking forward to Texas and Baylor coming to Morgantown and competing against them here.”
No. 21 Texas (8-6, 2-2 Big 12) enters the contest with the Mountaineers after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. The Longhorns fell to No. 6 Texas Tech, 4-2, before dropping No. 33 TCU, 4-0, in Sunday’s match.
Freshman Bianca Turati leads the Longhorns in singles play and is ranked No. 37 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings. She has obtained a 7-5 record in dual matches this spring at the No. 1 singles slot. Fellow freshman Petra Granic heads into the match with a 9-4 record and is currently ranked No. 89. Neda Koprcina is ranked No. 99, and has is 7-5 at No. 2. The tandem of Granic and Danielle Wagland lead the Longhorns in doubles action and rank No. 51.
Friday’s contest is the True Blue match, and all fans are encouraged to wear their blue West Virginia gear. The first 25 fans in attendance will be given a WVU tennis visor. Free pizza will also be provided.
The Mountaineers will return to the courts on Sunday to take on Baylor. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
Baylor (13-5, 1-2 Big 12) enters the weekend after falling to No. 9 Texas Tech, 4-2, last weekend. The Lady Bears will take on Iowa State on Friday, before Sunday’s matchup against WVU.
Senior Blair Shankle leads BU with a 9-2 record at the first position and boasts a No. 3 national ranking. The pair of Shankle and Elizabeth Profit are ranked the 32nd-best tandem in the country
The match is designated as First Responders Day. All First Responders are encouraged to attend the match, where they will be given a free WVU Tennis t-shirt and recognized at the break between singles and doubles. Free Dunkin Donuts will also be provided, courtesy of the Mountaineer Maniacs.
“We are looking forward to having the First Responders joining us of Sunday and recognizing them,” Lisac continued. “Overall, it should be a good weekend. We are very excited to get back to competition and see what the weekend brings.”
