McNeil Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- After a record-setting and victorious performance last weekend at the Akron Invitational, junior Shamoya McNeil of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
McNeil led the Mountaineers with a victory in the women’s triple jump gold division while inking her named into the WVU indoor record books to close out the final day of competition at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 4. She won the event with an indoor career-best mark of 12.93 meters, setting her at the No. 2 spot on WVU’s all-time indoor performance list. McNeil improved 0.11 meters from last year’s Big 12 Championship.
West Virginia concluded the meet with a victory, a runner-up finish and totaled seven top-five finishes. McNeil ranks fifth-best in the triple jump in Big 12 competition and is nationally ranked at No. 19.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia (16-7, 4-7) suffered an 80-55 setback to Iowa State on Saturday in Morgantown … Iowa State shot 51.8 percent from the field and limited WVU to a season-low 29.7 shooting percentage … Katrina Pardee led the Mountaineers with 16 points, while Tynice Martin followed with 13 … Lanay Montgomery and Teana Muldrow each corralled nine rebounds.
Notes: The Mountaineers have lost two consecutive games and are looking to avoid a three-game losing skid for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign … Since February 2015, WVU is 6-0 in its next game after losing back-to-back games … junior Teana Muldrow needs just 62 points to become the 33rd Mountaineer to reach the 1,000-point club … senior center Lanay Montgomery continues to lead the nation with a 69.2 field goal percentage ... Montgomery is also sixth in the NCAA with 3.3 blocks per game … She is averaging 12.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game … Tynice Martin leads WVU with 16.9 points per game, which ranks third in the Big 12 … Muldrow follows with 14.2 points per contest … Chania Ray continues to lead the league with 5.7 assists per game … Alexis Brewer’s 50.0 three-point field goal percentage is also tops in the Big 12.
Coach Mike Carey after Saturday’s loss to Iowa State: “Needless to say, Iowa State came in here on our home floor and played five times harder than we did. Give them credit. We make people play their best. We didn’t play any defense. We don’t care about defense. We look so one-on-one defensively, one-on-one offensively. I don’t have any answers.”
This Week in Gymnastics: The No. 24 Mountaineers stay on the road and travel to Towson, Maryland, for a tri-meet against the Tigers and Temple on Sunday, Feb. 12, with action inside the SECU Arena set to begin at 2 p.m.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU (5-2, 1-1) earned its second-best score of the year and its top mark away from Morgantown with a 195.95-194.875 win at Kent State on Feb. 4, at the M.A.C. Center … the Mountaineers swept the team and individual titles … WVU scored a season-best 48.75 on balance beam and also added marks of 49.15 on vault, 48.925 on uneven bars and 49.125 on floor exercise … senior Alexa Goldberg earned the all-around title with a 39.15 mark … she also won the bars title with a season-best 9.875 score … sophomore Kirah Koshinski won vault and floor with matching 9.9 scores … senior Brooklyn Doggette tallied her first career event win with a career-best 9.825 mark.
Notes: The Mountaineers have now scored 195.0 or better in three straight meets … WVU’s final mark was its best road score since earning 196.225 at the Unite for Her Pink Invite in Philadelphia on Feb. 26, 2016 … Goldberg has scored 39.0+ seven times throughout her career … freshman Kassidy Cumber earned a career-high 9.725 on bars and 9.825 on floor … she finished tied for third on floor … junior Robyn Bernard earned a season-high 9.85 on vault and placed second … Goldberg tallied a career-high 9.775 on vault and a season-best 9.825 on floor … Koshinski now ranks No. 13 in program history with five career floor scores of 9.9 or better … she also scored a career-best 9.8 on beam for the third time this season … freshman Abby Kaufman returned to the beam lineup for the first time since Jan. 8 and placed third with a 9.775 … with the win, WVU improves to 22-9 all-time against Kent State.
This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will split up for a pair of meets on Feb. 10-11 … select members of the team will travel to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Washington, and the remainder of the team will take a short trip to Huntington, West Virginia, to compete at the Marshall Invitational.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia traveled to Akron, Ohio, to compete at the two-day Akron Invitational on Feb. 3-4 … the second day of competition was highlighted by a West Virginia victory from junior Shamoya McNeil and a runner-up finish from sophomore Danique Bryan while totaling five top-five finishes … McNeil and Bryan inked their names into WVU’s top-five indoor performance list … McNeil claimed the women’s triple jump gold division title as she won the event with an indoor career-best mark of 12.93 meters, setting her at the No. 2 spot on WVU’s all-time indoor performance list … West Virginia earned a runner-up finish in the women’s long jump gold division thanks to Bryan, as she posted a career-best mark of 5.97 meters and now sits at No. 4 in WVU indoor history … Bryan improved by 0.06 meters from her last best set at the PSU National Open on Jan. 27.
Notes: Sophomore Faith Penny placed seventh in the women’s high jump gold division, leaping 1.66 meter … in the women’s 800-meter run gold division, redshirt freshman Candace Jones placed fourth, crossing the finish line with a career best time of 2:12.27. She improved by 0.28 seconds from last year’s time set at the High Point Team Challenge … in the women’s 800-meter run blue division, junior Rebecca Wendt placed fifth, crossing the finish line in 2:16.46 … redshirt freshman Olivia Hill led the Mountaineers in the women’s one mile gold division race with a fifth place finish thanks to a season-best time of 5:01.44, improving by 1.23 seconds from her time at the PSU National Open … in the women’s 400-meter dash blue division, sophomore Chaqieta Robinson placed 11th with a time of 59.92 … on Friday, juniors Sara Finfrock and Rebekah Lafata tied for fifth as both earned season-best marks of 3.68 meters.
Coach Sean Cleary after the Akron Invitational: “Overall, we had more high quality performances than a week ago. The vaulters came out and competed much tougher this weekend. Week by week we should see them clear more bars. Danique (Bryan) and Shamoya (McNeil) continue to improve as we work our way through the season. Both need a few more meets to be in good position for the Big 12 Championship. This was Candace’s (Jones) first 800 meter of the season, and therefore we feel she did a nice job. It’s our hope that we see her drop a few more seconds off that time as we continue to race.”
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers (2-11, 0-2) return to the WVU Coliseum for the first time since early November … WVU will host a pair of Big 12 duals this week … on Thursday, the team welcomes No. 19 South Dakota State for a 7 p.m. match … the dual will serve as the Mountaineers’ annual Cradles for Cancer match, with pink t-shirts available for a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine … West Virginia hosts Iowa State on Sunday at 2 p.m … the first 250 fans will receive a free WVU wrestling Bull Trained shirt.
Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia traveled to No. 8 NC State for a dual on Sunday in Raleigh… the Mountaineers suffered a 30-9 setback at the hands of the Wolfpack… Devin Brown won an 8-4 decision over NCSU’s Tommy Cox at 125… Joe Wheeling topped Robbie Rizzolino in a 4-2 decision at 141… No. 5 Jacob A. Smith won an 8-5 decision over Malik McDonald at 197.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 2 Mountaineers (10-0, 7-0 GARC) close their regular-season slate with two matches in Lexington, Kentucky … WVU will face Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent, No. 5 Kentucky, on Saturday, Feb. 11, and No. 3 Murray State on Sunday, Feb. 12 … both matches will begin at 8 a.m. at the Buell Armory.

Notes: The Mountaineers are enjoying a three-week break in action and will return to competition with two matches in Lexington, Kentucky, on Feb. 11-12.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers have three weeks off to prepare for the Big 12 Championship from Feb. 22-25 in Austin, Texas … the four-day championship meet begins at 11 a.m. ET each day.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia closed out the regular season with a strong victory from both the men’s and women’s squads at Bucknell on Friday and with a win from the men at Villanova on Saturday … on Friday, the WVU women claimed victories in all 13 events, while the men posted wins in 10 of the night’s 13 contests … with two 1-2-3-4 finishes on springboard and four 1-2 finishes in the pool, the women earned a 126-75 win … the Mountaineer men recorded three podium sweeps, two on springboard, and three 1-2 finishes en route to a 124-79 victory … at Villanova on Saturday, the Mountaineer men grabbed 11 wins with four podium sweeps, on their way to a 172-71 victory against Villanova, while the WVU women won five events with two 1-2-3 finishes on springboard, to fall 147-96 to the Wildcats.
Notes: The WVU women are now 5-6 in dual meets and 1-1 in Big 12 while the men are 5-4, 1-0 Big 12 … at Bucknell, senior Emma Skelley led the Mountaineers with three individual wins, while junior diver Michael Proietto, sophomore diver Julia Calcut and freshman Julia Nilton recorded two individual victories each … at Villanova, Proietto swept both boards for the Mountaineer men and WVU went 1-2-3 on 3-meter … Merwane El Merini led the way for the WVU men winning two relay events and one individual event
Coach Vic Riggs after competition at Villanova: “Another very solid effort today. The competing yesterday and the long travel day caught up with us a bit, but overall, I feel we did a great job of racing. Our women’s 200 medley and freestyle relays were the fastest in season along with our men’s 200 free relay, which I feel is great considering everything. Amelie (Currat), (Emma) Skelley, Merwane (El Merini) and James (Koval) continue to compete at a high level. I’m looking forward to how our underclassmen will compete in a month. They have really progressed well this season. Today’s competition will be much like day four at the Big 12 Championship and it’s good for the freshmen to experience that. It’s so important to manage yourself at Big 12s, and we discussed that after the meet.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers (2-4) will travel to Buffalo, New York, to take on the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday, February 11. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET. The Bulls enter the contest with a 1-0 record after defeating St. Bonaventure, 7-0, on February 4.
Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia traveled to Virginia for a pair of matches against VCU and William & Mary … the Mountaineers were able to split the two matches, defeating VCU 4-3 on Friday and falling to William & Mary on Saturday … WVU jumped out to a fast start on Friday winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point … Habiba Shaker, Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo all earned wins in their singles matches to secure the Mountaineer victory … West Virginia only won one doubles match on Saturday as the Tribe took the match 7-0.
Notes: Friday’s win against VCU moved the all-time series to 3-2, with the Rams holding the advantage … Shaker leads the Mountaineers in singles play, holding a 4-2 record at No.1 … the tandem of Goetz and Yvon Martinez pace WVU with a 4-2 record in doubles play.
Coach Miha Lisac following Friday’s win over VCU: “Today was a good team win. We were able to pull through in a few tough instances in doubles at the No.1 court, as well as Habiba (Shaker) at No.1, Paula (Goetz) at No.3 and Lyn Yuen (Choo) at No. 5. This is a match that we can draw from and take this confidence into tomorrow.”

Last Week in Golf: West Virginia traveled to Orlando, Florida, for a head-to-head meeting with Penn State … The two squared off for the Athletic Directors Trophy at Reunion Resort on Saturday … The Nittany Lions defeated the Mountaineers, 377-386 … Chris Williams was the top WVU finisher, shooting a 74 to finish two over par and in third place … Drew Dewald and Tristan Nicholls tied for fourth, each carding a 76 for four over par … Max Sear finished six over par with 78 … Etienne Papineau shot an 82, while Alan Cooke shot 84.
Notes: The Mountaineers and Nittany Lions resumed a head-to-head series that dates back to 1940 … the two teams played for the Athletic Directors Trophy, with Penn State claiming the win for the third time … the original event started in 1971 and featured Penn State, WVU, Syracuse and Pitt … It was disbanded after the Nittany Lions’ win in 1972 as Pitt, Syracuse and later West Virginia cut their programs … Max Sear continues to lead the team with a 72.75 stroke average … Etienne Papineau boasts a 73.25 stroke average … Alan Cooke is averaging 73.45 … Sear’s 66 at the VCU Janney Shootout in October was the lowest round of the season for WVU … Sear leads the team with eight subpar holes.
