Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team recorded its first road victory of the season on Friday against previously-unbeaten VCU, 4-3, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Virginia.
“Today was a good team win,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “We were able to pull through in a few tough instances in doubles at the No.1 court, as well as Habiba (Shaker) at No.1, Paula (Goetz) at No.3 and Lyn Yuen (Choo) at No. 5. This is a match that we can draw from and take this confidence into tomorrow.”
WVU earned the day’s first victory in doubles, when Yvon Martinez and Paula Goetz defeated VCU’s Magda Aubets and Gabriella Araujo, 6-2 at No.3. The tandem of Habiba Shaker and Lyn Yuen Choo then fell to Noumea Witmus and Darya Berezhnaya, 6-3 at No. 2 to knot up the doubles matches at one all. Senior Kaja Mrgole and freshman Christina Jordan broke the tie when they dropped Anna Rasmussen and Janina Braun, 6-4, on the first court to give the Mountaineers the doubles point.
