WVU to Host Virginia Tech, Marshall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University tennis team will play host to two rivals this weekend as they take on Virginia Tech on Feb. 18, and Marshall on Feb. 19 at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. Both of the matches this weekend are slated to begin at noon.
“Marshall and Virginia Tech are two programs that have had solid runs for many years now,” said fourth-year coach Miha Lisac. “It’s going to be another good opportunity for us to showcase where we are, what we have accomplished and to get out in front of our home crowd and get them fired up with our play.”
West Virginia heads into the weekend with a 3-4 overall record after dropping Buffalo, 4-3, last Friday. WVU is led by junior Habiba Shaker who goes into the weekend needing only one win in singles play to reach the 50 win mark. She leads all Mountaineers with a 5-2 record this season at No.1. The duo of Yvon Martinez and Paula Goetz pace the team with a 4-2 record in doubles.
Virginia Tech enters Saturday’s match with a 5-2 record. Last weekend, the Hokies split a pair of matches at home, falling 5-2 to Marshall and defeating Radford, 7-0. Virginia Tech is led by junior Caroline Daxhelet, who is ranked as the No. 52 singles player in the current Oracle/ITA national singles rankings. Senior Francesca Fusinato ranks No. 66 in singles play. The tandem of Daxhelet and Elena Cerezo-Codina come in at No. 51 in the doubles rankings.
Saturday’s match will kick off rivalry weekend and will feature free pizza for the first 100 fans in attendance. There will also be a pom-pom distribution. Fans are encouraged to stay after the match for an autograph signing with the team.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers will host in-state rival Marshall. The two schools will meet for the 39th time, in a series that started 1973. WVU holds a 21-17 advantage over the Thundering Herd. The match is designated as a Gold Rush match, the first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free WVU tennis t-shirt. All fans are encouraged to wear gold to the match. Free pizza will also be available for the first 150 fans in attendance.
For the first time ever, WVU Tennis will offer a free shuttle to Sunday’s match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. The shuttle will pick fans up at two campus locations starting at the Mountainlair at 11:20 a.m. before heading to Towers at 11:40 a.m. The shuttle will return downtown twice during the match.
The Thundering Herd enter Sunday’s matchup with a 5-2 record. Junior Maddie Silver leads Marshall in singles play, holding a 6-1 overall record. Anna Pomyatinskaya and Derya Turhan lead the Thundering Herd in doubles play with a 6-1 mark at the first position.
