MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Matthew Sharpstene's top-20 finish led the way for the West Virginia University golf team at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Sunday.
The Mountaineers finished tied for 14th in the 21-team field with a score of 274-303-297=874. They were 22-over par as a team. No. 12 LSU took home the team title at 31 under with a score of 821, followed by runner-up South Carolina at 24-under par with an 828. No. 15 Cal was third at 23-under par (829).
"We had what I thought were some pretty solid rounds out of Tristan (Nicholls), Etienne (Papineau) and Matthew (Sharpstene)," coach Sean Covich said. "Once again, the winds blew pretty hard and those guys adjusted and fought until the end. Now we will get some much-needed time off and prepare for the spring season."
Sharpstene shot a career-best 210 for the second top-20 finish of his career as he tied for 18th overall. After carding a career-low 67 in the first round, he finished even par in the third round for a score of 67-72-71 at three-under par.
Playing as an individual, Philipp Matlari shot 72-74-74=220 for seven-over par. He finished tied for 60th place. Etienne Papineau also finished in 60th place, carding 68-79-73=220, also finishing seven over.
Avery Schneider tied for 72nd place at 10-over par. His scorecard showed 66-74-83=223. Tristan Nicholls was a stroke behind, shooting 73-81-70. He totaled a 224 for 11 over, taking 82nd place.
Max Sear tied for 111th place overall. He shot 74-78-85=237 to finish 24 over par.
The Mountaineers will resume play in February, when they head to Orlando, Florida, to take on Penn State in head-to-head action on Feb. 4.
