MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team defeated Miami (OH) in four of six singles matches on Saturday, Oct. 21., as it continued play at the Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers began the second day of the tournament with a singles match against Miami (OH). West Virginia claimed four of the six matches, with two victories coming in third-set tiebreakers. Sofía Duran won at the No. 2 slot in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6 and 10-6, over Milana Lysova. At No. 3,
Lyn Yuen Choo used a dramatic third-set tiebreak to drop Emily Struble, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
Paula Goetz used two sets to drop Makenzie Meyers, 6-1 and 6-3, at No. 4.
Abigail Rosiello would use two 6-0 set victories to best Janelle Ghanem, at No. 6. On the first court, Miami's Nelli Ponomareva defeated
Anne-Sophie Courteau in two sets, 7-5 and 6-2, and
Kirsten White fell to Miami's Lena Babunski, 6-3 and 6-2, on the fifth court.
"We had another day of a lot of competitive opportunities," coach
Miha Lisac said. "Going into tomorrow we need to continue to focus on responding to situations better and executing the right things more consistently. Hopefully, tomorrow we can wrap up the tournament in a strong fashion."
WVU then faced James Madison in three singles matches to wrap up singles play.
Christina Jordan fell to Jona Roka, 6-3 and 6-1, on the first court. At No. 2, JMU's Diane Flement bested
Giovanna Caputo, 6-3 and 6-2. On the third court, Sofía Duran was edged by Kimmy Herrock in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-4 and 7-6 (7).
In the afternoon session of play, the Mountaineers played two rounds of doubles. In the first round, WVU faced Miami and JMU in two matches each. Roka and Amos of JMU bested Choo and Caputo, 6-2, on court No. 1, before Martinez and Courteau fell to Flament and Kluska, 6-3 at No. 2. WVU went on to fall in the final two matches of the second round. Jordan and Goetz dropped the match, 6-4, and White and Rosiello lost an early lead to Lysova and Kalita and fell, 6-3.
In the second round, the Mountaineers faced Miami in two matches and JMU in one match. Choo and Caputo edged Visiukhin and Kalita, 6-3, to give WVU its lone doubles win of the afternoon. White and Rosiello fell to Miami's Devi and Meyers, 6-2.
Jordan and Courteau dropped their match to JMU's Amos and Roka, 6-1, to end the day the second day of competition for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers will conclude the Martha Thorn Invite tomorrow, beginning with a singles match against Miami (OH) at 9:00 a.m. at the WVU Tennis Courts. WVU will wear pink to support breast cancer awareness in concurrence with ITA's (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) community service month.
