After a short break, all three teams competed in four doubles matches apiece. WVU faced Miami and James Madison in the first round of doubles action. The Mountaineers and Redhawks split the matches as Courteau and Duran fell, 6-2, and the tandem of Choo and Caputo bested Lysova and Stuble, 6-4.
West Virginia and James Madison also finished tied at one-all in doubles. Jordan and Goetz were able to outlast Flement and Herrock in a tiebreaking set 7-6 (4), White and Rosiello fell to Roka and Owens, 6-3, to end the first round of doubles.
In the second round, the Mountaineers faced Miami and JMU in one match, respectively. Jordan and Goetz fell to Lysova and Kalita of Miami, 6-3, as the doubles tandem of Choo and Caputo dropped Amos and Kluska, 6-1, to end the day for the Mountaineers.
"There were definitely a lot of competitive situations, which was good," coach
Miha Lisac said. "That is what we want to have in this tournament. I didn't feel like we responded well. There were some positive things individually, but overall, we tended to shy away from having the passion to go after it. Tomorrow, we need to focus on bringing that pride and passion forward."
The Mountaineers will resume the Martha Thorn Invite on Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning with a singles match against Miami (OH) at 10:00 a.m. at the WVU Tennis Courts. Saturday is Mountaineer Nation Day, a 24-hour period for fans to show their pride and passion for WVU. Fans planning to attend tomorrow's match are encouraged to use the Snapchat Geofilter and send their snaps to the West Virginia University account so it can be added to the story.
