MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University tennis team will host Akron on Saturday, Jan. 28, and Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club in the first home matches of the year.
Saturday’s match against Akron is slated to begin at 11 a.m. The match will mark the 15th time that the two schools will meet, with the Mountaineers holding a 9-5 record all-time against the Zips. Sunday’s contest versus Maryland will begin at noon. Updates from both matches will be available on Twitter by following @WVUtennis.
“It is obviously good to be able to play in front of our home fans,” said fourth-year coach Miha Lisac. “We are excited to get back out to Ridgeview Saturday against Akron and Sunday against Maryland. We will play two solid matches this weekend.”
Free Dunkin Donuts will be available to everyone that attends the match on Saturday. Additionally, two tickets to the WVU men’s basketball game against Oklahoma State on February 4 will be raffled off. Fans are encouraged to stay after the match for an autograph signing with the team.
Akron will head into the weekend with a 1-1 record after falling to Northwestern on Jan. 14 and defeating Chicago State Jan. 15. The Zips will travel to Youngstown State on Friday to take on the Penguins before heading to Morgantown.
“We are excited to continue to work and we are excited to challenge ourselves,” Lisac said. “At the same time we are looking forward to packing Ridgeview and getting a home court advantage going.”
On Sunday, the Mountaineers will host border rival Maryland, starting at noon. The match is designated the MAC appreciation day and members of the Baseline Club will be recognized during the intermission between doubles and singles. Free pizza will also be available for the first 150 fans in attendance. Fans are also encouraged to stay after the match for a poster autograph signing with the team.
The Terrapins enter Sunday’s matchup with the Mountaineers with a 1-0 record as they beat Navy 5-2 on Jan. 25 in Annapolis, Maryland. Junior Ekaterina Tour leads Maryland in singles play and is ranked No.120 in the country. WVU is seeking its first win against Maryland in school history.
