Santos and Kaleiohi Named Athletes of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After record-setting performances from West Virginia University’s soccer programs, juniors Heather Kaleiohi and Jose Santos have been named the WVU student-athletes of the week, presented by University Apartments.
Men’s goalkeeper Santos extended his shutout streak to a record-setting seven consecutive games and more than 705 minutes with a pair of wins last week. Santos made a career-best seven saves in WVU’s 3-0 win against American on Sept. 20, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first time this season. He followed with a four-save outing at UNCG on Sept. 24. With seven shutouts, Santos has moved into a tie for No. 9 in program history for most shutouts in a career.
The seven consecutive shutouts are the longest streak in program history, and Santos has not allowed a goal since the first half of WVU’s season-opening game against No. 9 Seattle. Santos ranks No. 1 in the country in both save percentage, 0.923, and goals-against average, 0.215.
For the No. 4 ranked women’s team, Kaleiohi not only scored the first goal for the Mountaineers in a 4-1 win at Richmond on Sept. 23, she set a WVU program record in the process. She scored just 47 seconds into the match on Friday night for the fastest goal scored in the program’s 21-year history. Kaleiohi beat the previous record by eight seconds (0:55), set by All-American Kate Schwindel in 2011.
WVU ended its nonconference slate with a 4-1 mark after the victory over the Spiders. It was the team’s first four-goal match of the season. Kaleiohi now ranks No. 2 on the team with eight points (4 G).
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 4 Mountaineers open the defense of their four straight Big 12 Conference regular-season titles with a pair of conference matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU first plays host to Baylor on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m., before welcoming Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. … Sunday is a Pink Match, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness … Sunday also is a Dollar Day, and all tickets will be available for $1 each … Sunday’s match will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (8-1-1) finished its nonconference slate with a 4-1 win at Richmond on Sept. 23 … four different Mountaineers tallied a goal, including the first from junior forward Heather Kaleiohi 47 seconds into the match for the fastest-goal scored in the program’s 21-year history … sophomore Hannah Abraham netted the gain the game-winner in the 42nd minute, while junior Carla Portillo and Jade Gentile added second-half goals, their first scores of the season … freshman Rylee Foster finished with six saves, three each half, and the Spiders’ lone score was on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
Notes: The Mountaineers improve to 3-1-1 all-time against the Spiders … WVU’s previous quickest goal was 0:55, scored by All-American Kate Schwindel at Georgetown in 2011 … Friday’s win was WVU’s first four-goal game of the season … senior Ashley Lawrence assisted on Portillo’s goal, giving her 21 career helpers and moving her into a tie at No. 9 with Kim Bonilla on the Mountaineers’ all-time career assist list … WVU shows a 30-game unbeaten streak at home in conference matches and has never lost a Big 12 match in Morgantown.
This Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers return home to begin their final homestand of the season against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Saturday, October 1 ... kickoff is set for noon ET, and admission is free for all fans, courtesy of WVU Medicine.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia (6-1-1) extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches with its school-record seventh consecutive shutout, a 1-0 win at UNCG on Sept. 24 … WVU opened the week with a 3-0 victory against American, with goals by senior Felix Angerer, sophomore Rushawn Larmond and senior Griffin Libhart and a career-best seven saves by junior Jose Santos … on Saturday, WVU earned a 1-0 win at UNCG, thanks to a goal by junior Jad Arslan and four saves by Santos.
Notes: WVU has posted seven consecutive shutouts, a new school record … Junior goalkeeper Jose Santos, who leads the nation in save percentage (.923) and goals-against average (0.215), is tied for No. 9 in school history with seven career shutouts and has not allowed a goal in more than 705 minutes … against American, senior forward Felix Angerer scored his second goal of the season, sophomore forward Rushawn Larmond scored his first of the season and senior midfielder Griffin Libhart tallied his first career goal which was the No. 2 play on Sports Center’s Top 10 Plays … Junior midfielder Jad Arslan netted his first goal of the season at UNCG.

The guys played both sides of the ball for 90 minutes tonight, and all the credit goes to the kids. For us to come in here and find that goal on the road, against such a well-coached and disciplined UNCG team, our kids were tremendous on the evening and certainly deserved to get the result tonight.”
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers return home for a pair of league matches … on Wednesday, WVU plays host to former coach Jill Kramer and TCU (9-3, 2-0) at the WVU Coliseum … the squad then welcome Iowa State (7-6, 0-2) on Friday … first serve for both matches is set for 6 p.m, ET.
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (9-6) opened conference play, going 1-1 on the week … the Mountaineers welcomed No. 5 Texas to the WVU Coliseum on Tuesday for their Big 12 opener … despite taking the first set from the Longhorns, WVU fell 3-1 in the match … Payton Caffrey had a team-high 23 kills with a pair of aces … Erin Slinde led the team with four blocks and also 19 assists … on Saturday, the Mountaineers claimed a 3-0 sweep at Texas Tech … Caffrey again led the way with 14 kills and a pair of aces … Mia Swanegan hit .440 with 12 kills and a career-best three aces.
Notes: WVU’s 3-0 sweep of Texas Tech was the program’s first Big 12 win since 2014 … it also marked the first Big 12 win for coach Reed Sunahara … rookie Payton Caffrey, who was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week last week, led the league in both service aces (0.57) and points per set (6.50) this week … she was also second in kills per set with 5.71 … Defensive Player of the Week Mia Swanegan ranked seventh this week with 1.14 blocks per set and was fifth with 0.43 aces per set … she was also 10th with 3.57 points per set … Swanegan leads the league in blocking with 1.40 blocks per set … Caffrey ranks second this season in kills per set (4.95), service aces (0.40) and points (5.57) … she is also second in double-doubles with seven … WVU’s .361 hitting percentage in its win over TTU is the team’s best of the season … the Mountaineers rank second in the league with 2.49 blocks per set and are fourth with 1.18 aces.
Coach Reed Sunahara after facing Big 12 foe Texas: “I thought we executed the game plan well when we needed to. Our passing was very consistent and kept us in the set. We were able to overcome some miscues, especially in that second set. It’s always good to get a Big 12 win.”
This Week in Cross Country: After a three week hiatus, the Mountaineers will compete at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 1, at 9:30 a.m.

Notes: West Virginia ranks No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association ... on Sept. 13, redshirt junior Jillian Forsey was named the Big 12 Runner of the Week after her victorious performance at the Texas Tech Open to begin the 2016 season ... Forsey is the second Mountaineer in program history to achieve Big 12 Runner of the Week honors ... WVU alum Sarah Martinelli received the weekly honor in 2013.
This Week in Women’s Tennis: Junior Habiba Shaker and freshman Christina Jordan will travel to the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women’s All- American Championships … pre-qualifiers will be begin on October 1 from the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California … Shaker will be the only Mountaineer competing in singles play … the duo of Shaker and Jordan will compete in doubles … should they advance through the pre-qualifying stage, qualifiers will be held from October 4-5 and the Main Draw is slated to begin on October 6
Last Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia competed in the Little Rock Classic and the team won three singles and five doubles matches … Shaker, Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez all picked up victories in singles play … senior Kaja Mrgole and Choo led the way for the Mountaineers in doubles play, as they came away with a record of 2-1 on the weekend … the Mountaineers were 0-3 at the Little Rock Classic against ranked opponents.
Notes: Shaker and Jordan are the first Mountaineers to compete at the ITA All-American Championships since 2007 … the duo will enter play at the All- American Championships with a 2-2 record in the fall.
This Week in Golf: West Virginia returns to Virginia for the Primland Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday … Wake Forest is hosting the event at the Primland Meadows Golf Course in Meadows of Dan … Max Sear, Etienne Papineau, Alan Cooke, Tristan Nicholls and Chris Williams will represent WVU at the tournament … the Highlands Course at Primland Meadows is a par-72 that runs 7,102 yards … in addition to the Mountaineers and host No. 19 Demon Deacons, Big 12 foe Kansas State (No. 78) will also be in attendance … No. 83 Georgia Southern, Loyola (Md.), No. 30 North Carolina, No. 36 Penn State, No. 79 UNCW and Virginia Tech.
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers traveled to Richmond, Virginia, to compete in the VCU Janney Shootout … the event was hosted by VCU at the Tuckahoe Course of the Country Club of Virginia on Monday and Tuesday … WVU finished tied for eighth place, shooting 286 -288=574 ... after finishing two under in the first round, the Mountaineers were even par in the second to finish two under as a team … Virginia Tech shot 28 under par with a score of 548 to take home the team title … Max Sear finished seventh to lead WVU … Etienne Papineau also had a top-20 finish, taking 18th.
Notes: Leading the Mountaineers, Sear posted his second top-20 finish of the season and tied a program record last week at the VCU Janney Shootout in Richmond, Virginia … Sear recorded six birdies and fired a bogey-free 66 in the second round … his score tied the program’s lowest round on record and marked the lowest round since the team’s reinstatement in 2014 … Sear’s two-round score of 71-77=137 is the lowest on record for the Mountaineers … four of the team’s five rounds thus far have come under par … Sear leads the squad with a 70.60 scoring average and -1.40 vs. par … Alan Cooke is second on the team with a 71.50 scoring average followed by freshman Etienne Papineau at 71.80 … Sear (66), Cooke (69) and Papineau (69) also boasts low rounds in the 60s … Sear leads the team with eight subpar holes, ranking ninth in the nation.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team opens the 2016 season with the fourth annual Gold-Blue Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, October 1 at noon, at the WVU Natatorium ... the intrasquad event is first of three home meets for West Virginia ... WVU opens regular season competition the following weekend, as the team hosts the West Virginia State Games at the WVU Natatorium on October 7-8.
Last Season in Swimming and Diving: The 2015-16 season was a record-breaking year for the Mountaineers ... at last year’s Big 12 Championship, WVU earned multiple team and pool records ... the men finished second in the Big 12, posting their best finish at the conference championship since joining the league, and coach Vic Riggs was named Men’s Coach of the Meet for the second time in the last three years ... the women’s team finished fourth ... senior Andrew Marsh won a Big 12 title in the men’s 100 backstroke while setting a Big 12 Championship record, the first Mountaineer swimmer to hold a championship record in any event ... Marsh also qualified to compete in three events at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year to cap his collegiate career ... freshman diver Austin Smith set a WVU record on the men’s platform at Big 12s, scoring 322.55 ... WVU had eight divers compete at the 2016 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, senior Lindsay Schmidt, sophomores Michael Proietto, Logan McHenry and Alex Obendorf and freshmen Averly Hobbs, Julia Calcut, Austin Smith and Emmott Blitch ... aside from athletics, the Mountaineers earned numerous scholar awards ... junior Nathan Howells was named to the 2015-16 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and he also was named to the 2016 Academic All-District At-Large Team.
Notes: Four members of the men’s swimming team competed at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials from June 26-July3, graduate Bryce Bohman, seniors Andrew Marsh, Max Spencer and junior Nate Carr ... the four swimmers raced in a total of nine events ... the Mountaineer women were named a Scholar All-America Team in both the fall and spring semesters.
This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers open their 2016-17 season against No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 2 … the teams will shoot smallbore in the WVU Rifle Range, and competition will begin at 8 a.m. … the air rifle relay will follow at 1 p.m. on the indoor track inside the Shell Building … a final and a “Fan Fest” will follow the air rifle competition, and fans will have a chance to participate in a shooting clinic, as well as meet the Mountaineers for pictures and autographs.
Last Season in Rifle: The Mountaineers earned their 18th overall and fourth straight NCAA title, shooting 4703 on March 12 at Akron … WVU swept the discipline titles, winning smallbore and air rifle for the second time under coach Jon Hammond … then-freshman Ginny Thrasher won the smallbore and air rifle individual titles, becoming the first freshman in NCAA history to win both titles … the Mountaineers also captured their seventh straight Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) title and finished the year at 12-0.
Notes: Four letterwinners return this season – senior captain Jean-Pierre Lucas, junior Elizabeth Gratz and sophomores Thrasher and Will Anti … Thrasher returns to competition after winning Gold in the women’s 10m air rifle at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics … four freshmen join the Mountaineers this season.
