MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team recorded a doubles victory on the final day of the Little Rock Classic in Little Rock, Arkansas on Sunday.
“We didn’t finish the tournament as well as we would have liked, but we saw some positive progress this weekend,” coach Miha Lisac said. “Today Habiba (Shaker) and Christina (Jordan) earned a good win in doubles and we found ourselves in some good battles in singles.”
The Mountaineers opened the day with doubles play, but were only able to win one of three matches. Habiba Shaker and Christina Jordan defeated Kansas’ Nina Khmelnitckaia and Tatiana Nikolaeva, 6-4. Kaja Mrgole and Lyn Yuen Choo fell to Arkansas’ Peyton Jennings and Sasha Shkorupeieva, 6-1. The Jayhawks’ Tatiana Nikolaeva and Maria Toran Ribes defeated Paula Goetz and Yvon Martinez, 6-4.
In singles play, Shaker fell to TCU’s Seda Arantekin 6-4 and 6-2 in Flight A. Also in Flight A, Mia Jurasic of Arkansas defeated the freshman Jordan, 6-1, 6-2. In Flight B Choo fell short in three sets to Arkansas’ Shkorupeieva 2-6, 6-2, and 6-4. In Flight C, Toran Ribes defeated Martinez 6-0 and 6-0.
“Now our goal is to prepare for the (ITA) All-American (Pre-Qualifiers), as well as the Cleveland State tournament to take a step forward,” Lisac said.
