MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Looking to build on a solid performance in last week’s season opening tournament in South Carolina, the West Virginia University golf team heads to Virginia to compete in the VCU Janney Shootout at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond on Monday and Tuesday.
Alan Cooke, Max Sear, Etienne Papineau, Tristan Nicholls and Jon Ransone will represent the Mountaineers at the event, which is hosted by the VCU Rams. Big 12 foe Iowa State will be in attendance, while Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Maryland, East Carolina, Boston College, UNC Charlotte, James Madison, UNCG, George Washington, Old Dominion, Radford and Richmond will make up the field. Seven members of the 15-team field rank inside Golfstat’s top-100: No. 84 ISU, No. 76 Maryland, No. 57 ECU, No. 82 Charlotte, No. 75 VCU, No. 66 JMU and No. 77 UNCG. The JMU Dukes are the defending champions of the event, while the Hokies won the tournament in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
The Tuckahoe Creek Course at the C.C. of Virginia is a par-72 that runs 6,927 yards. Golfers will tee off in an 8:45 shotgun start for 36 holes on Monday before concluding with the final 18 holes on Tuesday. West Virginia is paired with Charlotte and UNCG for the first day.
“I’m excited to get back to playing,” said coach Sean Covich. “It’s a lot closer event, so the golf course and the grass and the weather should be a lot more familiar to us. I know the guys are ready to play. We had a really good showing last week. I was very encouraged by our scores at Kiawah. We’re just excited to get back to action.”
Cooke, Sear, Papineau and Nicholls competed at last week’s Invitational at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island in South Carolina. Sear led the squad with a 76-67-73=216 to tie for 19th place overall. Papineau tied for 33rd in his collegiate debut with a 218 for two over par, while Nicholls carded a 222 for six over par. Cooke was in line for a runner-up finish, but was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard. The Mountaineers tied for ninth at the event at nine over.
Ransone will make his season debut for the Mountaineers this week. He played in four events for the Mountaineers last season before qualifying for the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, this summer.
