Tennis Unveils 2016-17 Schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Highlighted by nine dual matches against opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament last year, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has unveiled the women’s tennis schedule for the 2016-17 season.
The Mountaineers are slated to compete in four tournaments during the fall season.
“We are excited to start the new year and the level of competition we have in place going into the 2016-17 season” said fourth-year women’s tennis coach Miha Lisac.
West Virginia will open the fall season in Williamsburg, Virginia at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational from September 16-18. The Mountaineers will face host William & Mary, Dartmouth, Penn, Old Dominion, Liberty, Maryland, and Marshall.
The following weekend, the Mountaineers will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas for the Little Rock Classic on from Sept. 23-25.
On Oct. 7 the Mountaineers will start the three-day Cleveland State Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. West Virginia will then close out the fall season the following weekend, October 14-18 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals in Norfolk, Virginia.
The 2017 spring season proves to be one of the most difficult schedules in the country, as the Mountaineers will face nine NCAA Tournament qualifiers, including two Round of 16 teams, and the national runner-up.
“The pre-Big 12 schedule is of a higher level every year for us” coach Lisac said, “We feel that we will be well prepared to dive into the start of the Big 12 schedule with teams we will be facing early in the season.”
WVU will open the spring season for the third consecutive time, with the Backyard Brawl at Pitt on January 21. The following day, they will travel to State College, Pennsylvania to face off against Penn State.
The Mountaineers open their home slate on Jan. 28 against Akron. The next day, they will square off with the Maryland Terrapins.
All home matches will be held at the Ridgeview Racquet Club until weather permits outdoor play.
After the two-game home stint, the Mountaineers travel to the 2016 Atlantic 10 Champion, VCU on Feb. 3, William & Mary College, on Feb. 4, and Buffalo on Feb. 11.
West Virginia then continues its non-conference slate in Morgantown against Virginia Tech on February 18, and Marshall the following day.
The Mountaineers will then close out their non-conference schedule on the road at Indiana.
WVU will then face the most grueling part of their schedule as Big 12 Conference play features six 2016 NCAA Tennis Tournament qualifiers.
The Mountaineers will open conference play on the road against Iowa State on March 11, followed by a swing through Kansas, as the team plays Kansas on March 24, and Kansas State on March 26.
West Virginia then returns to Morgantown for a two-match home stand beginning with a contest against Texas on March 31, followed by Baylor on April 2.
The squad then travels to Fort Worth, Texas for a showdown with TCU on April 7, and will then travel to Texas Tech on April 9.
The Mountaineers will close the regular season with two games at home, beginning with the 2016 national runner-up, Oklahoma State on April 21. Senior Day for Kaja Mrgole will be on April 23 as the Mountaineers square off with the Oklahoma Sooners.
West Virginia will begin postseason play with the Big 12 Championship from April 27-30 in Norman, Oklahoma.
