Forsey Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –After winning the 6k race at the Texas Tech Open on Thursday, West Virginia University cross country runner Jillian Forsey has been named the WVU student-athlete of the week, presented by University Apartments.
To open the 2016 regular season, Forsey won the women’s 6k race on Sept. 8, in Lubbock, Texas, while also helping the Mountaineers collect a team victory. WVU also posted four top-six finishes.
With 70 runners in the mix, Forsey, a redshirt junior, easily made her presence up front, as she crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 21:05.50.
Out of 12 teams, WVU won scoring 20 points, besting Texas Tech by 15 points. The Red Raiders finished second with a team score of 35.
In the first week of the USTFCCCA regional rankings, West Virginia ranks No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, moving up one spot from the preseason regional ranking.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 1 Mountaineers return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for matches against Princeton on Sept. 16 and No. 24 Georgetown on Sept. 18 … kick Friday night is slated for 7 p.m., while Sunday’s contest will begin at 1 p.m. … Friday is Olympic Night, while Sunday is Youth Soccer Day … all youths under the age of 13 who wear a youth soccer jersey Sunday will receive free admittance … a free soccer clinic will follow the match.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (6-0-1) pushed its win streak to six with a 3-1 win at No. 5 Duke on Sept. 9, at Koskinen Stadium, in Durham, North Carolina … two second-half goals from junior forward Michaela Abam, as well as a first-half blast from junior defender Amandine Pierre-Louis, helped the Mountaineers earn their first-ever win over the Blue Devils, the 2015 NCAA Tournament runners-up ... down two goals, Duke did cut WVU’s lead in half in the 66th minute before Abam converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute to push the advantage back to two goals … junior Michelle Newhouse made two saves in the win … WVU outshot Duke 16-8 and forced the Blue Devils into four saves … both teams earned three corner kicks.
Notes: WVU is now 2-0-1 against top-10 ranked teams and 3-0-1 against all ranked opponents … this is the first year since 2012, and the third since at least 2005, WVU has defeated at least two top-10 ranked teams … the Mountaineer defense held the Blue Devils to a season low in shots (8) and shots on-goal (3) … Duke only earned one shot in the first half, also a season low … Abam now paces the team in goals (4) and points (9).

Notes: Friday’s win was coach Marlon LeBlanc’s 100th with the Mountaineers … LeBlanc’s record at WVU improved to 100-72-27 and he is 104-75-27 in his career … WVU has won each of its last three matches, all by 1-0 scores … West Virginia was ranked No. 22 in the Soccer America poll and No. 30 in the College Soccer News rankings … following his game-winning goal last week against Princeton, sophomore Tucker Stephenson was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News.

Tonight, my players certainly bailed me out because we probably didn’t have our best evening. Give a lot of credit to ETSU, because they fought tooth-and-nail to stay in that game. Their goalkeeper was fantastic and the defense was stout, clearing two off the line. We hit the post a couple of times, and they did everything they could to keep us from winning this game. I’ve got good players.”

Last Week in Cross Country: The team opened the 2016 regular season at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 8 and at the Harry Grove Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 10 ... at the Texas Tech Open, WVU finished first out of 12 teams, with a team score of 20 points ... redshirt junior Jillian Forsey claimed the victory for the Mountaineers in a field of 70 runners, crossing the finish line in 21:05.50 ... WVU posted four top-six finishes at Texas Tech, including redshirt juniors Maggie Drazba in second (21:27.80) and Brynn Harshbarger in fourth place (22:38.80) ... and senior Brianna Kerekes placed sixth with a time of 22:46.00 ... on Saturday at the Spiked Shoe Invite, West Virginia placed fifth with a team score of 147 ... junior Amy Cashin crossed the finish line first for WVU, placing 14th overall with a time of 21:45 ... redshirt freshman Olivia Hill finished 28th with a time of 22:40, followed by redshirt freshman Candace Jones in 32nd (23:04) and redshirt juniors Allie Diehl in 36th (23:17), and Rebecca Wendt in 37th (23:21).
Notes: The last time the Mountaineers won a regular-season opener was in 2014 at the Lehigh Invitational ... it was the first time WVU raced at Texas Tech’s Rawls Course.

Our group will leave here in good spirits, but fully aware that we have a long way to go before we are on position to reach our goals. I am happy with this as a starting point. This Week in Women’s Tennis: To open the 2016 fall season, the Mountaineers travel to Williamsburg, Virginia, to compete in the William & Mary Tribe Invitational from Sept. 16-18 … the Tribe Invitational will consist of nine teams: No. 39 William & Mary, No. 45 Dartmouth, No. 47 Penn, No. 67 Old Dominion, Liberty, Maryland, Marshall and West Virginia.
Last Season in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia finished the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 6-15 … sophomore Habiba Shaker led the Mountaineers with a 21-4 record in singles play … five Mountaineers, Hailey Barrett, Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis, Kaja Mrgole and Shaker were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Yvon Martinez was named to the second team … freshmen Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team … for the third consecutive season, the Mountaineers were named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team … Shaker, Goetz, Mrgole and Rosiello were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Notes: Coach Miha Lisac added two newcomers to the roster for the 2016-17 season - redshirt sophomore Makenzie Stolar, a native of Morgantown, and freshman Christina Jordan, from Detroit.

This week in Golf: West Virginia opens the 2016 -17 season on Monday at The Invitational at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort on John’s Island, South Carolina … the two-day tournament will consist of 36 continuous holes on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday … the site of the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championships, the Ocean Course is a par-72 and runs 7,115 yards … the College of Charleston will host the event … Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Maryland, Troy and VCU make up part of the 16-team field … Chris Williams, Alan Cooke, Etienne Papineau, Max Sear and Tristan Nicholls will represent the Mountaineers with Cole Hand playing as an individual.
Notes: The Mountaineers had a strong summer of play … senior Alan Cooke won the 97th West Virginia Amateur and qualify for The Greenbrier Classic, though the tournament was later canceled due to flooding … sophomore Max Sear won the U.S. Amateur Qualifier in New York and competed in the 2016 U.S. Amateur … Sear also won the Ontario Men’s Amateur … junior Jon Ransone was the runner-up at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier, earning a spot in the 2016 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Springfield Country Club … the 2016-17 season marks the second varsity season since the early 1980s for the Mountaineers.
