MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The quest for Gold for 10 current and former West Virginia University student-athletes will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 3, as the 2016 Summer Olympics kick off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Current Mountaineer soccer standouts Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence kick things off on Wednesday when Team Canada plays Australia in a group stage match at 2 p.m. ET. The contest is televised nationally on NBCSN. Canada will play two more group games before women’s quarterfinal action begins on Friday, Aug. 12.
Four Mountaineers are participating in shooting events including Nicco Campriani (Italy), Ziva Dvorsak (Slovenia), sophomore Ginny Thrasher (United States) and Petra Zublasing (Italy). The women’s events begin on Saturday, Aug. 6, and the men’s shooting events start Monday, Aug. 8. WVU Hall of Fame inductee Dave Johnson is a manager for the USA Shooting team.
Former women’s basketball players Natalie Burton (Australia) and Yelena Leuchanka (Belarus) begin group play competition on Saturday, Aug. 6. A total of five games will be played in the group stage before the women’s basketball quarterfinal action begins on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
In track and field, WVU’s Jessica O’Connell will compete in the first round of the women’s 5,000-meter run on Tuesday, Aug. 16. If she advances, she’ll run in the final on Friday, Aug. 19.
The women’s triathlon, which features former West Virginia standout Sarah-Anne Brault, begins at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The opening ceremony in Rio is slated for Friday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. WVUsports.com will have comprehensive updates on the Mountaineers throughout the 2016 Summer Olympic games.
