Over the next few months, WVUsports.com will visit with returning West Virginia University women’s basketball players to recap the previous season and preview the upcoming year. This edition features sophomore guard and reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Tynice Martin.
Q: You were tabbed the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and were named a finalist for USBWA National Freshman of the Year. Did you exceed your expectations in your rookie season?
A: Yes. Coming in I didn’t know that I would even be close to becoming Freshman of the Year. In the end, the hard work paid off and it worked out for me.
Q: You became more effective midway through the season. What changed for you?
A: Once I started watching my film, I was able to get in the gym and improve. And making better grades helped as well. I had to turn everything around on and off the court.
Q: How did the coaching staff help you adjust?
A: Coach (Mike) Carey told me how effective I could be and where I could go if I worked harder. Coach (Sharrona) Reaves would lift me up when I was down. I had a lot of positive energy from my coaches and teammates.
Q: What are some things you thought you did well last season and what are some things you plan on improving for the upcoming year?
A: On the court, I think one of the things I did well was cheer and hype on my team. I want to work on my leadership skills and improve upon my weaknesses. I want to be a better role model for my teammates.
Q: Do you have any specific goals for the upcoming year?
A: I am working on my ball handling skills and trying to attack the basket more because I know teams will be more focused on my jump shot this year. Academically, I want to be able to maintain a 3.0 GPA and I want to be on the academic honor roll.
Q: You were really excited when Bria Holmes was drafted by your hometown team the Atlanta Dream. Have you had the opportunity to see Bria play?
A: I haven’t seen Bria play in person in yet. I told her if she ever needed anything, I have people all around Atlanta. I was excited for her regardless of where she went, but because she was drafted by the Dream, I can go her home and see her play. I am really happy for her. She’s living her dream right now.
