MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Avery Schneider and Tristan Nicholls currently rank inside the top 10 as the West Virginia University golf team finds itself tied for eighth place after one round of play at the Robert Kepler Invitational at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course on Saturday afternoon.
After a delayed start due to inclement weather, the Mountaineers shot a 302 to finish the round 18 over par, tied with Michigan. UNLV boasts a first-place score of 289 for five over par, while the host Buckeyes are in second after shooting 291 for seven over par. Michigan State and UAB are tied for third at nine over par with scores of 293.
A native of nearby New Albany, Ohio, Schneider is tied for fourth place at one over par. He birdied a trio of holes on the front nine before adding another on the back nine as he shot a 72 on the day. Nicholls is a stroke back and tied for ninth place after carding a 73 to finish two over.
“Our guys battled hard today in some pretty adverse conditions,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “Avery and Tristan played some very impressive golf on a difficult course. Overall, every one of the guys had a positive attitude and embraced the conditions. I hope we can keep the momentum for tomorrow’s final round.”
Freshman Max Sear is tied for 53rd place, carding a 78 for seven over par. Teammate Mason Short registered a 78 for eight over par, sitting in a tie for 60th place.
Cole Hand rounded out the Mountaineer squad, shooting an 84 for 13 over par. He is tied for 82nd place.
With the tournament previously shortened in anticipation of inclement weather, golfers will tee off Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. in a shotgun start for the final round of play.
