MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision against Big 12 foe Kansas, today, at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (6-9, 0-4 Big 12) put themselves in a familiar situation this week, as the team dropped back-to-back doubles matches on court two and court one, respectively, to surrender the doubles point to the Jayhawks (13-5, 3-2 Big 12).
Sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Paula Goetz dropped a 6-3 decision on court two to KU’s Anastasiya Rychagova and Smith Hinton. On court one, sophomore Habiba Shaker and Kaja Mrgole suffered a 6-2 setback to KU’s No. 67 Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitchkaia to give the Jayhawks a one-point match advantage.
In singles action, the Jayhawks tallied three straight victories at the No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 slots to secure the win over the Mountaineers.
Choo fell to KU’s Khmelnitchkaia in straight sets on court four by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Shaker dropped her match at the No. 1 singles position against KU’s No. 95 Rychagova with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
The match clinching point came at the No. 2 position, where sophomore Carolina Lewis stumbled against KU’s Hinton (7-6 (11-9), 6-3).
Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
“It was a good battle today, but Kansas played well and took the match,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We are focusing on continuing to get better for Sunday’s match against Kansas State.”
The Mountaineers return to the court on Sunday, April 10, for a match against Kansas State. The contest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
The match is free to all fans, and there will be pizza available prior to the contest. Fans are encouraged to wear gold, as the Mountaineers will host their first-ever Gold Rush event. In addition to the Gold Rush, Sunday’s match is also known as Kids Day. The Mountaineers will hold a meet-and-greet and autograph session along with a free 30-minute youth clinic following the match against the Wildcats on Sunday.
