Cramer Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his walk-off home run in WVU’s 5-4, 10-inning upset of No. 16 Oklahoma State on Friday, April 1, junior first baseman Jackson Cramer has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Cramer hit two home runs, including the walk-off winner in the 10th inning, to fuel WVU’s upset victory. Cramer first homered in the sixth before hitting the game-winning shot in the 10th on the first pitch of the inning. The walk-off came after OSU took their first lead of the game with three runs in the ninth inning.
Cramer’s home runs were his team-leading fourth and fifth of the season and the first two-homer game of the year for any Mountaineer. Cramer has reached base in a team-best 45 consecutive games after a pair of walks in Sunday’s series finale.
In the weekend series against OSU, Cramer hit .556 with a 1.33 slugging percentage and a .692 on-base percentage with five hits, three RBIs, 12 total bases and three walks, all team-highs.

Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia won its series vs. No. 16 Oklahoma State, with a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory in the 10th inning in the opener before a 4-3 win on Saturday ... OSU avoided the sweep and claimed the series finale, 8-1 ... to begin the week, the Mountaineers played two midweek games for the first time and suffered a 7-5, 10-inning setback to Canisius before a 9-0 loss to the Golden Griffins ... in the series opener on April 1, junior Jackson Cramer belted a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give WVU a 5-4 upset victory over No. 16 Oklahoma State ... WVU bounced right back though to tie it at 4-4 in the ninth ... with two outs, freshman pinch hitter Marques Inman singled to right field to score freshman Jimmy Galusky from second ... on April 2, senior lefty Ross Vance and back-to-back home runs led WVU to a 4-3 victory over the Cowboys ... the Mountaineers won the series over the Cowboys as Vance threw 7.1 innings of four-hit, three-run ball to earn his team-high-tying fourth win ... Vance was backed up by back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning by senior center fielder KC Huth and freshman right fielder Darius Hill ... Hill had two RBIs on the day ... Cramer added three hits and an RBI.
Notes: West Virginia improved to 14-10 on the year and 4-4 in Big 12 play with a series win over No. 16 Oklahoma State … WVU played two extra-inning games and is now 2-2 in extra innings this season … WVU earned its second consecutive Big 12 series victory and sixth weekend series win or tie in the first seven weekends of the year … senior KC Huth and freshman Darius Hill hit WVU’s first back-to-back home runs of the season on Saturday … senior pitcher Ross Vance made his first career plate appearance in the seventh inning on Saturday and walked … Friday’s attendance of 1,818 was the sixth-largest crowd in Monongalia County Ballpark history and the 18th-largest home crowd in program history … junior Jackson Cramer’s walk-off home run in the 10th inning Friday was his second home run of the day and fifth of the year and his second walk-off hit of the season … Cramer walked on Sunday, to extend his reached base streak to a team-high 45 games.

Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU scored 194.25 and finished in fifth place at the 2016 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Championships, on April 2, at the University of Alabama’s Coleman Coliseum … freshman Kirah Koshinski just-missed qualifying for the NCAA National Championships, as she tied for second place on vault with a 9.875 mark … she also paced the team on floor and beam, finishing sixth (9.85) and 25th (9.7), respectively … freshman Tiara Wright paced the team on bars and finished 12th overall with a 9.825 score … WVU finished with marks of 48.95 on floor, 48.825 on vault, 48.725 on bars and 47.75 on beam.
Notes: No. 4-ranked and top-seeded Alabama won the regional with a 197.125 score … 10th-ranked and second-seeded California scored 195.925 and placed second … Wright finished the year scoring seven straight marks of 9.8 or better on bars … sophomore Zaakira Muhammad scored 9.8 on floor, giving her marks of 9.8 or better on the event each week since earning a career-high 9.95 on Jan. 24 … Koshinski scored 9.85 or better on vault in all but one meet this season … Saturday marked the career finale for seniors Melissa Idell, Jaida Lawrence and Audrey Tolbert.
This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia (6-8, 0-3 Big 12) returns to the courts on Friday, April 8 and Sunday, April 10, as the team plays host to Big 12 foes Kansas and Kansas State … Friday’s match is set to begin at 3 p.m., while Sunday’s contest is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. … weather permitting, both matches will be held outside, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts … the matches are free to all fans, and pizza will be available prior to the contests … in addition, Sunday’s match is a Gold Rush, and fans are encouraged to wear gold … the Mountaineers will also host a free 30-minute youth clinic following Sunday’s match against the Wildcats.

Notes: Sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 11-1, while sophomores Carolina Lewis and Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Paula Goetz each own six singles wins apiece … the doubles tandem of senior Hailey Barrett and Shaker holds a team-best 7-3 mark at the No. 1 slot this season … West Virginia and Kansas will meet for the fourth time in program history, as the Mountaineers look for their first victory over the Jayhawks in the series … West Virginia and Kansas State will meet for the sixth time, and the Wildcats hold a 5-0 edge over in the all-time series.
This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will compete at the Mason Spring Invitational, on April 9 in Fairfax, Virginia, hosted by George Mason.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia had a busy weekend, as the team spilt to compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, and the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, on Friday, April 1 ... sophomore Shamoya McNeil and freshman Danique Bryan competed at the Texas Relays ... sophomores Bria Welker, Jillian Forsey and Brynn Harshbarger competed at the Stanford Invitational ... battling inclement weather at the Texas Relays, McNeil wasn’t fazed as she posted a top-five finish in the triple jump, finishing in fifth place with a mark of 12.76 meters ... Bryan placed ninth in the long jump section B, jumping 5.54 meters ... traveling to the Stanford Invitational, Welker placed 33rd in the 400 meters with a time of 58.92 ... Forsey finished 14th in the 5,000 meter run in 16:05.89 ... Harshbarger crossed the finish line in 34th in the 10,000 meter run with a career-best time of 35:28.09 ... she improved 2.77 second from her previous best set in 2015.
Coach Sean Cleary after the Texas Relays: “Texas was good to our student-athletes. The weather was not what we were hoping for, but both Shamoya (McNeil) and Danique (Bryan) went out and competed very well. This was Shamoya’s best opening meet, while Danique appears to be rounding into shape. This trip was successful.”
Cleary after the Stanford Invitational: “Jillian (Forsey) ran a tremendous race. She ran the second fastest time of her life and achieved a mark that will be required for the NCAA Championships. Jillian ran a little faster than we expected her to run today. This bodes well for the season. Brynn (Harshbarger) was unfortunately not quite up to strength after developing a respiratory sickness over the past few weeks. While she did run her fastest time ever, she was hoping for a little more out of herself.”
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will compete in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on Monday and Tuesday, teeing off at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday ... the tournament is hosted by Mississippi State at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers tied for 11th place after the two-day tournament at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee from April 2-3 ... on Saturday, April 2, WVU shot a 295 through the first 18 holes, but posted a team score of 307 in the second round for a combined score of 602 for 34 over par ... the Mountaineers sat in 12th after the second round ... on Sunday, West Virginia rebounded in the final round with a team score of 297 to tie for 11th place ... freshman Max Sear jumped 11 spots in the standings to tie for 32nd place ... he carded a pair of birdies on the final 18 holes, finishing with a score of 73-77-72=222 for nine over par ... Alan Cooke also birdied a pair of holes across the final round, finishing one stroke behind Sear at 72-76-75=223 ... he ended the tournament 10 over par and tied for 39th place.
Notes: The Mountaineers finished with a team score of 295-307-297=899 for 47 over par at the event, which was hosted by No. 9 Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Legends Club ... the Commodores shot five under to take home the team title with a score of 847, while No. 19 Florida was the runner-up at four under with an 848. ... No. 17 Alabama was third at 11 over par, shooting an 863.
Coach Sean Covich after the second round at the Mason Rudolph: “We really struggled in the wind in the second round. We’re hoping to move up the leaderboard tomorrow.”
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers return to the water this week for the Knecht Cup Regatta, held on April 9-10, in West Windsor Township, New Jersey … the regatta will provide competition for over 70 schools from across the country and more than a dozen Division I women’s programs will be in attendance … Big 12 foes Alabama, Kansas and Old Dominion are scheduled to compete in the two-day event.
Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers did not compete last week.
Notes: Most recently, West Virginia completed in a series of races against North Carolina and Old Dominion on March 25, in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Lake Wheeler … the Mountaineers won three races and tallied five runner-up finishes against the Monarchs and Tar Heels on the 2,000 meter course … the morning races were highlighted by a first-place finish in the first novice four race.
