MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team concluded its 2016 campaign with a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma in the first round of the 2016 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship, today, at the Greenwood Tennis Center, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Mountaineers fell behind 1-0, as the team dropped back-to-back matches at the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles slots by a score of 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.
With West Virginia down 1-0, the Mountaineers were unable to mount a comeback in singles action. The Sooners captured three straight wins to record a 4-0 triumph over the Mountaineers.
“Today’s match didn’t go as planned from the start,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We were too passive in doubles to take charge of the match. That gave Oklahoma an advantage going into singles. Habiba (Shaker), Carolina (Lewis) and Paula (Goetz) fought well. They all had good showings in singles, but we couldn’t tip the overall match our way.”
WVU fell behind 2-0, after sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo stumbled against OU’s Christiana Brigante in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) on court five. At the No. 1 slot, senior Hailey Barrett dropped a 6-1, 6-1 setback to No. 116 Lily Miyazaki.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 6 position, where junior Kaja Mrgole fell in straight sets to OU’s Malene Stripp by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
With the loss, WVU closed the spring season with a 6-15 overall record.
