MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second straight year, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team will take on No. 7-seed Oklahoma at the 2016 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship first round on Thursday, April 28, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers (6-14, 0-9) enter the conference tournament as the No. 10 seed. The winner of tomorrow’s matchup will face No. 2-seed TCU on Friday, April 29. The quarterfinal match against the Horned Frogs is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET.
“Tomorrow’s match is no different than before,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We have focused on improvement throughout the season, and we have seen some levels of progress. That definitely has to come to fruition tomorrow. We are looking for everyone to step on the courts tomorrow ready to go. We have played Oklahoma before this season, so we are prepared. Tomorrow is when things are supposed to come together.”
In the lone meeting between the Sooners and the Mountaineers this season, Oklahoma edged West Virginia by a score of 4-0 on March 20, at the Gregg Wadley Indoor, in Norman, Oklahoma. Lily Miyazaki ranks No. 116 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll. Emma Devine and Miyazaki also rank as the No. 55 doubles tandem in the country.
“We are familiar with each other, and that is how it is in the Big 12,” Lisac noted. “We both learned from the previous match this season, and we are both more prepared for tomorrow’s contest. It’s all about how we put things in play when the match starts.”
West Virginia concluded its 2016 regular season against No. 34 TCU and No. 17 Texas Tech at home on April 22 and April 24, respectively. The Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision to the Horned Frogs on April 22, at Ridgeview Racquet Club, followed by a 4-0 setback to the Lady Raiders on April 24, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts.
Sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 12-3, followed by freshman Paula Goetz with seven singles victories. Sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Carolina Lewis each own six singles wins apiece. The doubles tandem of senior Hailey Barrett and Shaker holds a team-best 7-3 mark at the No. 1 slot, while the duo of junior Kaja Mrgole and Choo hold a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 3 slot this season.
Oklahoma State comes into the weekend as the No. 1 seed, as the Cowgirls completed conference play with an undefeated record for the first time in program history.
