MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis suffered a 4-0 setback to No. 34 TCU, today, at Ridgeview Racquet Club, in Morgantown.
West Virginia (6-13, 0-8) dropped two doubles matches on court one and court three, respectively, to surrender the doubles point to TCU (13-5, 5-3) early on.
At the No. 1 slot, junior Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Habiba Shaker fell to TCU’s Seda Aranktekin and Olaya Garrido-Rivas by a score of 6-3. However, sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Paula Goetz made quick work of TCU’s Mia King and Caroline Wegner to claim the 6-4 victory on court two.
With the doubles point tied at one apiece, senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Yvon Martinez could not overcome TCU’s Aleksandra Zenovka and Alexis Pereira on court three. The duo suffered a 7-6 (7-3) setback to give the Horned Frogs the one-point advantage.
“I thought we had a good start in doubles today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We did better in terms of the way we approached the match – energy, focus and determination. We played all the way through doubles. Even when we do the right things, sometimes we are going to come out on top, and sometimes we are going to come out on the bottom against solid teams. We also had a solid start going into the first set of singles. Unfortunately, it took a turn in the second set on many courts today.”
In singles, West Virginia’s deficit grew after Choo fell to TCU’s Zenovka in straight sets on court four (6-4, 6-0). At the No. 2 singles slot, Goetz dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to TCU’s Wegner.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 3 position, where Lewis stumbled against TCU’s Garrido-Rivas (7-6 (4), 6-4). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
With the win, TCU now holds a 4-0 all-time series edge over West Virginia.
The Mountaineers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 24 for their Senior Day match against Big 12 foe Texas Tech. The contest is set to begin at 10 a.m., at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. West Virginia will celebrate the career of lone senior Hailey Barrett. In addition, WVU also will host a free 30-minute youth clinic following the match.
