Throughout the year, sophomore Carolina Lewis will share her thoughts on the 2015-16 women’s tennis season, what it’s like being a Division I student-athlete at West Virginia and what makes being a Mountaineer so special.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Our season is coming to a close, as we play our final two home matches this weekend. Not only does this mark the end of our regular season, but it also marks the end of lone senior Hailey Barrett’s collegiate career at West Virginia.
When we take on Texas Tech this Sunday, we will celebrate Hailey's Senior Day. Since I have been here, she has always been a strong leader on our team. Hailey has truly defined and showed us what it means to be a leader, but at the same time, she was also our teammate and friend. I remember visiting WVU in May 2014, and Hailey was one of the first people I met. The first thing that really sold me on West Virginia was how genuine the team was. We are always looking out for each other. I first experienced that with Hailey, especially when I felt lost during my freshman year.
Hailey's leadership is massively felt on the court as well. Her iconic "alright guys" pre-match talks will be missed, as well as her radiating positivity and focus (unless puppies are involved). Even though Hailey suffered a stress fracture in her foot and was unable to play in most of our Big 12 matches, she made sure her presence was felt. She was the motivator that kept us on track.
After a pair of home matches this weekend, we will finish the season with the Big 12 Championship hosted at Oklahoma State. Our goal remains to move past the first round. The Big 12 Conference is one of the toughest tennis conferences in the nation, with plenty of depth, but we keep trying to look forward at our long term goal of continuing to build this program.
