MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision at No. 25 Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
The match originally scheduled outdoors was moved to the Weller Center due to weather in the Austin area. WVU (6-11, 0-6) surrendered the doubles point and dropped four singles matches before the match was halted. Texas improved to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 action.
“We will take things that we have to improve upon into tomorrow’s match against Baylor,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We are looking for a more confident approach toward our game. The goals for the weekend remain the same. We have to get better and make progress in our game overall when it comes to competing.”
West Virginia dropped the doubles points with losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Mountaineer duo of Kaja Mrgole and Habiba Shaker fell 6-2 to Breaunna Addison and Katie Poluta. The Longhorns clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory from Danielle Wagland/Daniella Roldan over WVU’s Lyn Yuen Choo/Paula Goetz.
Yvon Martinez and Hailey Barrett led 4-3 in No. 3 doubles over Texas’ Neda Koprcina and Chelsea Crovetti before the match was abandoned due to the Longhorns winning the doubles point.
In singles action, West Virginia’s Shaker fell to No. 11 Addison at court No. 1 in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). Mrgole battled Roldan in the No. 5 singles match, but fell 7-5, 6-1. Texas clinched the match with a win from Koprcina over WVU’s Goetz, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 position. Martinez fell 6-1, 6-2 to Texas’ Lana Groenvynck at No. 6 to conclude the match.
In the abandoned matches, Carolina Lewis won the first set 6-4 at the third court before Wagland evened the match at 6-0. The contest finished with Wagland leading 2-0 in the final decision set. Choo trailed 6-2, 3-2 to Texas’ Poluta at court No. 4 before the match was halted.
