MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team swings through Texas for a pair of Big 12 matches this weekend, as the Mountaineers take on No. 25 Texas on Saturday, April 16, followed by a contest against No. 45 Baylor on Sunday, April 17.
The match against the Longhorns (12-6, 4-2 Big 12) is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET, at the Whitaker Tennis Courts, in Austin, Texas, while the match against the Bears (14-13, 3-3 Big 12) will start at 12:30 p.m. ET, at the Hurd Tennis Center, in Waco, Texas.
“We expect to get better when it comes to competing this weekend, and we expect to get better when it comes to our overall approach of preparation,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Regardless of who we play against, whether it’s against Texas and Baylor this weekend or TCU and Texas Tech next weekend, we have the same approach for every match. We have a lot of work to do, and we are looking forward to finishing the season strong.”
West Virginia (6-10, 0-5 Big 12) and Texas will meet for the fourth time in program history, as the Longhorns hold a 3-0 all-time series advantage. Last season, the Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision against the Longhorns on March 29, at Ridgeview Racquet Club, in Morgantown.
West Virginia and Baylor will also meet for the fourth time in program history, as the Bears hold a 3-0 all-time series edge. Last season, the Mountaineers suffered a 4-3 setback against the Bears on March 27, at Ridgeview Racquet Club, in Morgantown.
In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia fell short in a pair of Big 12 matches at Ridgeview Racquet Club. The Mountaineers dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 34 Kansas on April 8, followed by a 4-2 loss to Kansas State on April 10. The Mountaineers claimed their lone win against the Jayhawks with a forfeit at the No. 6 singles position. WVU then claimed one doubles win and two-of-six singles victories in the loss to the Wildcats.
Sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 12-2, followed by freshman Paula Goetz with seven singles victories. Sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Carolina Lewis each own six singles wins apiece. The doubles tandem of senior Hailey Barrett and Shaker holds a team-best 7-3 mark at the No. 1 slot, while the duo of junior Kaja Mrgole and Choo hold a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 3 slot this season.
Most recently, Texas notched a pair of Big 12 road victories to Texas Tech and TCU last weekend. The Longhorns defeated Texas Tech by a score of 4-3 on April 8, in Lubbock, Texas, followed by a 4-3 victory to TCU on April 10, in Fort Worth, Texas.
UT’s duo of Breaunna Addison and Danielle Wagland ranks No. 12 in the country, winning a total of 13 dual matches at the No. 1 slot this season. Addison also ranks No. 11 in singles, leading the team with a 16-2 dual-match record. Neda Koprcina holds a perfect 9-0 mark at the No. 2 position.
Most recently, Baylor won a pair of midweek matches on April 13, in Waco, Texas. The Bears defeated Incarnate Word by a score of 4-1, before upsetting No. 41 Rice by a score 4-2. Baylor has won nine of its last 11 matches overall and boats an 11-7 record at home this season.
BU is led by the 10th-ranked doubles duo of Kiah Generette and Blair Shankle, who have won seven of their last eight matches. Shankle is also ranked No. 89 in singles by the ITA.
Of note, Baylor will play Iowa State in a Big 12 matchup this afternoon, before West Virginia comes to town on Sunday.
"We don’t get weeks off, regardless if it’s someone at the top of the conference or someone who maybe hasn’t done that well in recent weeks,” Lisac noted. “That’s what we expect. That’s what we expect every week when we play in the Big 12."
