MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior women’s soccer senior Amanda Hill is one of eight students to be honored with the Order of Augusta, as announced today by the University.
The award is WVU’s most prestigious student honor. Hill, along with volleyball junior Hannah Shreve, also was named a WVU Foundation Outstanding Senior.
Established in 1995, the Outstanding Seniors award recognizes students for their scholarship, leadership and service. The Order of Augusta honors the superior scholarship, demonstrated leadership and community and public service of a select few of these exceptional students. The award is named for its historical significance in the state. Augusta was among the original names considered by the legislature when the state seceded from Virginia in 1863.
“For Amanda to be one of eight seniors recognized for an outstanding career at WVU is simply incredible,” women’s soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Amanda excelled in all facets as a Mountaineer – in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community. Not only is she so deserving of this award, she also deserves the recognition that accompanies this prestigious designation. Amanda set an example for all student-athletes throughout her time at WVU; it was never about Amanda – she always wanted to give back.”
A native of Washington, Pennsylvania, Hill will graduate this May with degrees in exercise physiology and animal and nutritional sciences with a minor in sports and exercise psychology.
A two-time team captain, Hill is a 2015 Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team honoree. She started all 88 career matches at defensive center midfield and ranks No. 3 on the Mountaineers’ all-time career starts list.
A 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honoree, she also is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 Soccer First Team honoree and earned the Big 12’s Dr. Gerald Lage Award in March 2016. Hill also has been named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists, as well as the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
Active in the WVU Community, Hill has served as a dog walker for the Washington (Pa.) Area Humane Society, volunteered at Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia and the Hearts of Gold Service Dog Organization, as well as assisted with WVU women’s soccer camps and the annual 4v4 breast cancer tournament.
Hill helped the Mountaineers advance to the 2015 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and record a program-record 19 victories. WVU was ranked in the top 10 nationally each week but two this season and hit a program-high No. 2 ranking twice. The four-time reigning Big 12 Conference regular-season champions, Hill won six conference titles with the Mountaineers.
A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Shreve became the first West Virginia native in a decade to play volleyball for the Mountaineers when she joined the squad in 2013. A two-year starter, Shreve has twice led the Mountaineers in blocks and ranked among the Big 12’s best in that category in 2014 and 2015. She was named to the 2015 Big 12 All-Academic Volleyball team and earned the Big 12’s Dr. Gerald Lage Award in March of 2016. Shreve has also earned mention on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and Big 12 All-Rookie Team.
“Hannah is a tremendous representation of this state and the volleyball program” volleyball coach Reed Sunahara said. “Her ability to not only balance academics and athletics, but also succeed at both, is outstanding. She epitomizes what it means to be a Mountaineer.”
Shreve is slated to complete her undergraduate degree in accounting this May before embarking on a master’s degree while playing for the Mountaineers next season. She is active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and volunteers with the Hoss Foundation in Morgantown.
Both the Outstanding Seniors and the new members of the Order of Augusta students will be honored at a ceremony on May 12 at the Erickson Alumni Center.
