MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia wrestling team have qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday.
Senior Bubba Scheffel (184) and junior Dylan Cottrell (157) had previously earned bids at the 2016 Big 12 Championship in Kansas City last weekend. Scheffel became a three-time qualifier by taking third place at 184 pounds at the tournament. Cottrell also took third place at 157 and will make his return to NCAAs. He previously competed at the event as a redshirt freshman for Appalachian State in 2014.
Jacob A. Smith earned an at-large bid at 197 pounds. Smith competed in the 2015 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, and has been national ranked at his respective weight all season long. He recently took sixth place at the Big 12 Championship.
Zeke Moisey, the 2015 NCAA runner-up at 125 pounds, also earned an at-large bid on Tuesday. The sophomore had a memorable run at least year’s tournament as an unseeded freshman, upsetting four ranked opponents to earn his spot in the championship finals. Moisey weighed in and injury defaulted matches at the Big 12 Championship as a precaution last weekend.
Seeds and brackets for the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships will be announced on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as part of the selection show at NCAA.com. The event will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City March 17-19.
