MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 75-ranked West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell short against Maryland, 5-2, in College Park, Maryland, inside the Tennis Center at College Park.
The Mountaineers (6-4) found themselves in a hole early after surrendering the doubles point to the Terrapins (4-6, 1-0 Big Ten). Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker suffered their second doubles loss of the season, as they stumbled against Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan by a score of 6-2 on court one. Sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez closed out the doubles session at the No. 3 slot, as they fell to Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams by a score of 6-0.
Of note, West Virginia dropped the doubles point for the first time since its match at then-ranked No. 47 Virginia Tech on Feb. 14, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
“Maryland came out very well in doubles today, and they deserve all the credit for taking the doubles point,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “However, I thought we responded well and battled back in singles. It was a battle both ways. There are valuable lessons that we can take away from these matches in order to get better and prepare for Big 12 play.”
In singles action, West Virginia claimed two-of-six singles matches in straight sets over the Terrapins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
Shaker picked up her ninth victory of the season, as she cruised past Maryland’s Bredikhina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the match. Playing primarily at the No. 2 position, Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 9-1.
Sophomore Paula Goetz picked up the Mountaineers’ second victory of the day, as she defeated Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault on court four by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (3).
West Virginia returns to action next week, as the Mountaineers close out their nonconference schedule with a match against in-state foe Marshall on Saturday, March 5, in Huntington, West Virginia. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. inside the Huntington Tennis Club.
